{"id":23209,"date":"2022-08-31T11:33:24","date_gmt":"2022-08-31T15:33:24","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=23209"},"modified":"2022-08-31T11:33:24","modified_gmt":"2022-08-31T15:33:24","slug":"nourah-al-qahtani-saudi-woman-jailed-for-45-years-for-social-media-posts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2022\/08\/31\/nourah-al-qahtani-saudi-woman-jailed-for-45-years-for-social-media-posts\/","title":{"rendered":"Nourah al-Qahtani: Saudi woman jailed for 45 years for social media posts"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\"><b class=\"ssrcss-hmf8ql-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A Saudi woman has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for her social media posts, in the second case of its kind this month, activists say.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">A terrorism court convicted Nourah bint Saeed al-Qahtani of &#8220;using the internet to tear the social fabric&#8221; and &#8220;violating public order by using social media&#8221;,\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/dawnmena.org\/saudi-arabia-government-sentences-woman-to-45-years-for-her-tweets\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">rights group Dawn reported<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Little is known about her other than that she criticised Saudi leaders.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\"><a class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-62574102\">Another woman was jailed for 34 years<\/a>\u00a0over her Twitter activity on 9 August.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Abdullah Alaoudh, director of research for the Gulf region at Dawn,\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/sounds\/play\/w172yfc47gzt51c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">told the BBC&#8217;s Newshour programme<\/a>\u00a0that the US-based group had learnt of Qahtani&#8217;s case only after being passed court documents by a judicial source, and that it was continuing to investigate.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;Nothing in her court documents pertains to any violence or criminal activity,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;The charges against her are really broad. They are using the counter-terrorism law and the anti-cybercrime law&#8230; that can criminalise any posting that is even remotely critical of the government,&#8221; he added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Several other female activists have reportedly been detained in relation to social media posts since last year. Mr Alaoudh said he feared that they could also be handed lengthy prison sentences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;The Saudi government is sending a strong signal to the West that it does not care about human rights.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Mr Alaoudh warned that it was &#8220;impossible not to connect the dots&#8221; between US President Joe Biden&#8217;s controversial meeting with Crown Prince Mohammed in Jeddah last month and &#8220;the uptick in the repressive attacks&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Mr Biden had previously vowed to make Saudi Arabia a &#8220;pariah&#8221; over its human rights record.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\"><a class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/ALQST_En\/status\/1564609659998191622\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ALQST, a UK-based rights group, also expressed grave concern about Qahtani&#8217;s sentence<\/a>, which it said was &#8220;based on [her] tweets&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">&#8220;As feared, we are witnessing an alarming deterioration of the human rights situation in Saudi Arabia,&#8221; it added.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">The Saudi Prisoners of Conscience account also\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-k17ofw-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/m3takl_en\/status\/1564861368725082112\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">tweeted that it had confirmation of the sentence<\/a>, but there was no immediate comment from Saudi authorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Earlier in August, Salma al-Shehab, a Saudi PhD student at Leeds University, was jailed for 34 years.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">She was arrested while on holiday in Saudi Arabia in January 2021, and was found guilty of &#8220;providing succour to those seeking to disrupt public order&#8221; and &#8220;publishing false and tendentious rumours&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Before leaving England, the 34-year-old mother of two had called for reforms and the release of prominent activists and intellectuals imprisoned under a crackdown on dissent overseen by Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper ep2nwvo0\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-7uxr49-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p class=\"ssrcss-1q0x1qg-Paragraph eq5iqo00\">Shehab&#8217;s prison term was believed to be the longest ever handed to a peaceful activist in the country until Qahtani&#8217;s was reported.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-62736118\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A Saudi woman has been sentenced to 45 years in prison for her social media posts, in the second case of its kind this month, activists say.
