{"id":22467,"date":"2022-06-12T10:56:09","date_gmt":"2022-06-12T14:56:09","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=22467"},"modified":"2022-06-12T10:56:09","modified_gmt":"2022-06-12T14:56:09","slug":"oklahoma-official-seeks-execution-dates-for-25-inmates","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2022\/06\/12\/oklahoma-official-seeks-execution-dates-for-25-inmates\/","title":{"rendered":"Oklahoma official seeks execution dates for 25 inmates"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">Oklahoma City (AP) &#8211; Oklahoma\u2019s attorney general has asked the state\u2019s highest appeals court to set execution dates for 25 death row inmates following a <a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/1f6c423725dee1f3bc865c6526afa2ee\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">federal judge\u2019s rejection<\/a>\u00a0of their challenge to the state\u2019s lethal injection method.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">In 25 similar filings with the Oklahoma Court of Criminal Appeals on Friday, Attorney General John O\u2019Connor wrote that the federal court\u2019s stays of execution are no longer in place and that therefore there are no longer any legal impediments to executing the inmates, who have exhausted their appeals.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">The state Department of Corrections has asked that the first execution be set no earlier than Aug. 25, O\u2019Connor wrote. He asked that the dates be set at four week intervals due to the time required for a clemency hearing for each inmate prior to an execution, and that the DOC requested executions be set at least 35 days after the court\u2019s order.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">\u201cFor the sake of the victims\u2019 families, many of whom have waited for decades \u2014 as many executions as possible are set four weeks apart,\u201d O\u2019Connor wrote.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">O\u2019Connor suggested that the first inmate who should be put to death is James Coddington, whose March 10 execution\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/ca597e710192d2286fdec3f9a764c534\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was postponed<\/a>\u00a0after U.S. District Judge Stephen Friot allowed him to join the lawsuit that ultimately failed.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">A phone call to the office of an attorney for Coddington rang unanswered Saturday. Defense attorneys have previously said Coddington has a mental illness.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">Coddington was convicted and sentenced to die for the\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/oklahoma-sentencing-albert-hale-c6e6da7533a846bfa2e877f154fa9a8f\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">1997 hammer killing<\/a>\u00a0in Choctaw of co-worker Albert Hale, who prosecutors said had refused to lend Coddington $50 to buy drugs.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">Second on the list, which the filing said was proposed based on when each inmate\u2019s appeals were exhausted, would be Richard Glossip, the lead plaintiff in the federal lawsuit. He was hours from being executed September 2015 when prison officials realized they had received\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/eb707c6c064444f29ab1bac58f890ac9\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the wrong lethal drug.<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">It was later learned\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-supreme-court-executions-oklahoma-scott-pruitt-mary-fallin-fae49518b1d24b89a4bc7a6a2255a2ec\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the same wrong drug<\/a>\u00a0had been used previously to execute an inmate, and executions in the state were put on hold.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">Glossip, who was twice convicted and sentenced to die for killing Barry Van Treese, the owner of the motel where Glossip worked, has maintained his innocence.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">Don Knight, Glossip\u2019s attorney, noted that a group of Republican lawmakers who question Glossip\u2019s guilt have\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/7d4a633d97922f4e3fe49a0a468eb563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">requested a review<\/a>\u00a0of the case.<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">\u201cThose findings could reveal exculpatory information previously unknown until this point,\u201d Knight said in a statement. \u201cUntil everyone has the opportunity to examine the final report, the Attorney General has a moral duty to delay the execution of Richard Glossip.\u201d<\/p>\n<p class=\"Component-root-0-2-159 Component-p-0-2-149\">Executions in Oklahoma\u00a0<a class=\"\" href=\"https:\/\/apnews.com\/article\/us-supreme-court-prisons-executions-oklahoma-oklahoma-attorney-generals-office-6e5eedd1956a38f83db96187651f145c\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">resumed in October<\/a>\u00a0with John Grant, who convulsed on the gurney and vomited before being declared dead.
