{"id":18962,"date":"2021-05-29T06:20:39","date_gmt":"2021-05-29T10:20:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=18962"},"modified":"2021-05-29T06:20:39","modified_gmt":"2021-05-29T10:20:39","slug":"canada-mourns-as-remains-of-215-children-found-at-indigenous-school","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2021\/05\/29\/canada-mourns-as-remains-of-215-children-found-at-indigenous-school\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada mourns as remains of 215 children found at indigenous school"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p><b class=\"ssrcss-hmf8ql-BoldText e5tfeyi3\">A mass grave containing the remains of 215 children has been found in Canada at a former residential school set up to assimilate indigenous people.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>The children were students at the Kamloops Indian Residential School in British Columbia that closed in 1978.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>The discovery was announced on Thursday by the chief of the Tk&#8217;emlups te Secwepemc First Nation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>Prime Minister Justin Trudeau said it was a &#8220;painful reminder&#8221; of a &#8220;shameful chapter of our country&#8217;s history&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>The First Nation is working with museum specialists and the coroner&#8217;s office to establish the causes and timings of the deaths, which are not currently known.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>Rosanne Casimir, the chief of the community in British Columbia&#8217;s city of Kamloops, said the preliminary finding represented an unthinkable loss that was never documented by the school&#8217;s administrators.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>Canada&#8217;s residential schools were compulsory boarding schools run by the government and religious authorities during the 19th and 20th Centuries with the aim of forcibly assimilating indigenous youth.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"unordered-list-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1pzprxn-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi0\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><a class=\"ssrcss-9nsdc6-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-49884387\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Canada reveals names of residential school victims<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"ssrcss-9nsdc6-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/magazine-33099511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The schools that had cemeteries instead of playgrounds<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>Kamloops Indian Residential School was the largest in the residential system. They expected to have preliminary findings by mid-June.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>British Columbia&#8217;s chief coroner Lisa Lapointe told Canadian broadcaster CBC &#8220;we are early in the process of gathering information&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-mysbf6-ComponentWrapper-CrossheadComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"crosshead-block\">\n<h2 class=\"ssrcss-qozapo-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\">What reaction has there been?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>The reaction has been one of shock, grief and contrition.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/JustinTrudeau\/status\/1398325696431263745?ref_src=twsrc%5Etfw%7Ctwcamp%5Etweetembed%7Ctwterm%5E1398325696431263745%7Ctwgr%5E%7Ctwcon%5Es1_&amp;ref_url=https%3A%2F%2Fwww.bbc.co.uk%2Fnews%2Fworld-us-canada-57291530\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">&#8220;The news that remains were found at the former Kamloops residential school breaks my heart,&#8221;<\/a> Mr Trudeau wrote in a tweet.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>Canada&#8217;s minister of indigenous relations, Carolyn Bennett,\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-9nsdc6-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/Carolyn_Bennett\/status\/1398455294196391946\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">said residential schools were part of a &#8220;shameful&#8221; colonial policy<\/a>. The government was committed to &#8220;memorialising those lost innocent souls&#8221;, she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>Terry Teegee, the regional chief of British Columbia&#8217;s Assembly of First Nations, called finding such grave sites &#8220;urgent work&#8221; that &#8220;refreshes the grief and loss&#8221; of communities in the region.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>Those views were echoed by other indigenous groups, including the First Nations Health Authority (FNHA).<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>&#8220;That this situation exists is sadly not a surprise and illustrates the damaging and lasting impacts that the residential school system continues to have on First Nations people, their families and communities,&#8221; its CEO Richard Jock wrote in a statement.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-mysbf6-ComponentWrapper-CrossheadComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"crosshead-block\">\n<h2 class=\"ssrcss-qozapo-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\">What were residential schools?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>From about 1863 to 1998, more than 150,000 indigenous children were taken from their families and placed in these schools.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>The children were often not allowed to speak their language or to practise their culture, and many were mistreated and abused.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>A commission launched in 2008 to document the impacts of this system found that large numbers of indigenous children never returned to their home communities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>The landmark Truth and Reconciliation report, released in 2015, said the policy amounted to &#8220;cultural genocide&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>In 2008,\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-9nsdc6-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/world-us-canada-42119158\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">the Canadian government formally apologised for the system<\/a>.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-18snukc-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi1\">\n<p>The Missing Children Project documents the deaths and the burial places of children who died while attending the schools.
