{"id":18698,"date":"2021-04-29T04:03:10","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T08:03:10","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=18698"},"modified":"2021-04-29T04:03:10","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T08:03:10","slug":"ahmaud-arbery-suspects-face-federal-hate-crime-charges-over-killing","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2021\/04\/29\/ahmaud-arbery-suspects-face-federal-hate-crime-charges-over-killing\/","title":{"rendered":"Ahmaud Arbery: Suspects face federal hate crime charges over killing"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p><b class=\"ssrcss-14iz86j-BoldText e5tfeyi0\">Three men have been indicted by a federal grand jury on charges of hate crimes and attempted kidnap over the fatal shooting of Ahmaud Arbery.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Gregory McMichael, his son Travis McMichael and neighbour William Bryan are already awaiting trial in Georgia on state charges, including murder.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Ahmaud Arbery, an unarmed black man, was jogging in February 2020 when he was confronted by the three white men.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>His killing and the subsequent police handling of the case sparked protests.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"unordered-list-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1pzprxn-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi3\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><a class=\"ssrcss-hiczm3-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-52623151\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ahmaud Arbery went jogging. Why did he die?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>In a statement, the US Attorney&#8217;s office in the Southern District of Georgia said the three men were charged with allegedly interfering with Mr Arbery&#8217;s right to use a public street because of his race.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>They are also accused of attempting &#8220;to unlawfully seize and confine Arbery by chasing after him in their trucks in an attempt to restrain him&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Gregory McMichael, 65, and his son Travis, 35, are each further charged with a count of using, carrying and brandishing a firearm. Travis is also charged with discharging the firearm.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The three men have already pleaded not guilty to charges, issued by a grand jury in Georgia last June, of malice murder, felony murder, aggravated assault, false imprisonment, and a criminal attempt to commit a felony.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>They face trial later in the year.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17061\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17061\" style=\"width: 493px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ahmaud-Arbery.png\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17061\" src=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ahmaud-Arbery.png\" alt=\"Ahmaud Arbery\" width=\"493\" height=\"311\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ahmaud-Arbery.png 493w, https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Ahmaud-Arbery-300x189.png 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 493px) 100vw, 493px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17061\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Ahmaud Arbery was out running in the Satilla Shores neighbourhood of Brunswick in Georgia&#8217;s Glynn County early in the afternoon on 23 February.<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Ahmaud Arbery was out running in the coastal city of Brunswick early in the afternoon of 23 February when he was pursued by the McMichaels.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>They told police they believed Mr Arbery resembled the suspect in a series of recent local break-ins.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Mobile phone video later emerged that appeared to show Mr Arbery trying to jog pass a stationary pick-up before struggling with one of the people in the truck.
