{"id":18652,"date":"2021-04-23T02:32:30","date_gmt":"2021-04-23T06:32:30","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=18652"},"modified":"2021-04-23T02:32:30","modified_gmt":"2021-04-23T06:32:30","slug":"akayed-ullah-times-square-subway-pipe-bomber-jailed-for-life","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2021\/04\/23\/akayed-ullah-times-square-subway-pipe-bomber-jailed-for-life\/","title":{"rendered":"Akayed Ullah: Times Square subway pipe bomber jailed for life"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p><b class=\"ssrcss-14iz86j-BoldText e5tfeyi0\">A man who set off a pipe bomb during rush hour in a New York subway station has been sentenced to life in prison.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Akayed Ullah, 31, detonated the bomb in Times Square station, which is the busiest in New York City, on 11 December 2017.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>He later claimed he had only wanted to kill himself and was not acting on behalf of the Islamic State (IS) group.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>US Circuit Judge Richard Sullivan described the attack as a &#8220;truly barbaric and heinous crime&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>&#8220;They were just people on the way to work or school,&#8221; Judge Sullivan said before sentencing Ullah to life plus 30 years on Thursday. &#8220;To you, these people were expendable.&#8221;<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>There were no deaths in the bombing, but four people were injured. The explosion also forced the closure of the station as well as the busy Port Authority Bus Terminal.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The pipe bomb was made from materials obtained from a nearby construction site, where Ullah had been working as an electrician.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>During his trial, prosecutors said Ullah&#8217;s &#8220;lone wolf&#8221; attack was inspired by IS propaganda, and that he was angry with then-President Donald Trump&#8217;s foreign policy in the Middle East.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Ullah was convicted in November 2018.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>His sentencing hearing was originally scheduled for April 2019. However it was delayed by two years, partly due to the Covid-19 pandemic.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Ullah was from Bangladesh but moved to the US in 2011.
