{"id":18289,"date":"2021-03-11T15:20:34","date_gmt":"2021-03-11T20:20:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=18289"},"modified":"2021-03-11T15:20:34","modified_gmt":"2021-03-11T20:20:34","slug":"circle-of-hope-boarding-school-couple-charged-after-tiktok-abuse-allegations","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2021\/03\/11\/circle-of-hope-boarding-school-couple-charged-after-tiktok-abuse-allegations\/","title":{"rendered":"Circle of Hope: Boarding school couple charged after TikTok abuse allegations"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p><b class=\"ssrcss-14iz86j-BoldText e5tfeyi0\">The owners of a shuttered religious boarding school in Missouri, USA, are facing dozens of criminal charges after abuse allegations were made on TikTok.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Boyd and Stephanie Householder face more than 100 charges, including dozens relating to child neglect and abuse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Attorney General Eric Schmitt said the pair had perpetrated &#8220;horrific, sexual, physical, and mental abuse&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Their daughter, Amanda, has been vocal about exposing alleged abuse at the Circle of Hope Girls&#8217; Ranch they ran.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>She set up in a TikTok page in 2020 which gave a platform to people voicing allegations about the institution.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>After the videos gained prominence, the Cedar County Sheriff&#8217;s Department opened an investigation and about two dozen girls were removed by state authorities.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The couple then shut the boarding school, which they started in 2006, and placed the property up for sale, according to local reports.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Both pleaded not guilty during their initial court appearance on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-mysbf6-ComponentWrapper-CrossheadComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"crosshead-block\">\n<h2 class=\"ssrcss-qozapo-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\">What are the couple accused of?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Boyd Householder, 71, faces 79 felony charges and one misdemeanour charge.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The charges include accusations of repeated statutory sodomy, statutory rape and sexual contact with a student under the age of 17. He also faces 56 charges of abuse or neglect of a child and one count of child molestation.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"unordered-list-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-1pzprxn-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi3\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><a class=\"ssrcss-hiczm3-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/blogs-trending-51007474\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok video sparks domestic abuse debate<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"ssrcss-hiczm3-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-54773257\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">TikTok &#8216;failed to ban child predator&#8217;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Allegations of physical abuse by Mr Householder include incidents where he allegedly slapped, hit and struck girls with objects. He is also accused of pushing a victim&#8217;s face into manure and pouring hot sauce down a victim&#8217;s throat, among other offences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The 22 charges against Mrs Householder, 55, do not involve sexual contact but detail allegations of neglect and abuse and the use of restraints &#8211; including placing one victim in a &#8220;secluded room with no light or sound for an extensive period of time&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/AGEricSchmitt\/status\/1369763395616960513\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Missouri Attorney General said<\/a> officials had identified 16 victims &#8220;so far&#8221; and described the case as &#8220;one of the most widespread&#8230; against young girls and women in Missouri history&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>More than a dozen former residents of the ranch previously\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-hiczm3-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nbcnews.com\/news\/us-news\/legal-loopholes-allow-abuse-go-undetected-religious-boarding-schools-advocates-n1257203\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">detailed their experiences to NBC&#8217;s Dateline programme<\/a>, where they alleged cruel punishments like withholding food and being forced to stand at a wall for hours at time.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The couple previously\u00a0<a class=\"ssrcss-hiczm3-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.kansascity.com\/news\/state\/missouri\/article245753025.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">dismissed allegations in an interview with the Kansas City Star newspaper last year<\/a>, saying the alleged victims &#8220;were angry and they&#8217;re bitter&#8221; Ranch was an institution in Cedar County, Missouri, which opened in 2006.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>On a now deleted website, the school said it aimed to &#8220;help young ladies who were destroying their lives through poor choices and behaviours and change their future&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>It also said the Bible and religious teaching was central to its reform programme.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Mounting allegations about Circle of Hope and another institution for boys have prompted calls to close legal loopholes that allow no oversight to some faith-based and private schools in Missouri.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Allegations of abuse at reform schools across the US gained prominence last year when celebrity Paris Hilton went public about the alleged abuse she suffered at one as a teenager in a YouTube documentary.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Both she and Amanda Householder have offered their support to the Breaking Code Silence campaign &#8211; an initiative aimed at exposing abuses and lack of oversight within the so-called &#8220;troubled teens&#8221; industry.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Ms Householder responded to the news of her parent&#8217;s arrest in a Wednesday TikTok, saying she was OK, but &#8220;overwhelmed&#8221; at the news.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>&#8220;This is a moment that does deserve to be celebrated,&#8221;
