{"id":18144,"date":"2021-02-02T21:06:49","date_gmt":"2021-02-03T02:06:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=18144"},"modified":"2021-02-02T21:06:49","modified_gmt":"2021-02-03T02:06:49","slug":"cardinal-pell-case-australian-news-outlets-admit-breaching-legal-ban","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2021\/02\/02\/cardinal-pell-case-australian-news-outlets-admit-breaching-legal-ban\/","title":{"rendered":"Cardinal Pell case: Australian news outlets admit breaching legal ban"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p><b class=\"ssrcss-14iz86j-BoldText e5tfeyi0\">Some of Australia&#8217;s largest media groups have pleaded guilty to contempt of court over their coverage of Cardinal George Pell&#8217;s since-overturned conviction in a sexual abuse case.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Twelve outlets admitted to breaching a legal order in 2018 that banned the cardinal from being identified &#8211; even though none named him in news coverage.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Under the plea agreement, charges against 15 journalists were dropped.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The pleas brought the trial &#8211; which began last week &#8211; to an abrupt end.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The original legal ban, known as a suppression order, had been ordered by a judge in Melbourne to avoid the possibility of prejudicing a separate legal case. That case was later aborted by prosecutors.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Publishers of newspapers including The Herald Sun, The Courier Mail, The Sydney Morning Herald and The Age, as well as one of the most popular commercial radio networks, Sydney&#8217;s 2GB, admitted charges on Monday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>They include Australia&#8217;s two biggest media companies, News Corp Australia and Nine Entertainment, among others<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Much of the news coverage, in December 2018, criticised the secrecy of the case without naming Cardinal Pell specifically.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Front-page newspaper headlines included: &#8220;Nation&#8217;s biggest story: The story we can&#8217;t report&#8221;; and &#8220;Secret scandal. It&#8217;s Australia&#8217;s biggest story. A high-profile person found guilty of a terrible crime. The world is reading about it but we can&#8217;t tell you a word.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Victoria&#8217;s Director of Public Prosecutions argued those headlines were nonetheless prejudicial to other legal proceedings.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The High Court of Australia later overturned the guilty verdict against Cardinal Pell, once one of the Pope&#8217;s most senior advisers.<\/p>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>On Monday, prosecutor Lisa De Ferrari said the plea deal provided &#8220;acceptance of responsibility in respect of each publication&#8221;, adding it was &#8220;in the public interest to withdraw the remaining charges&#8221; against individual journalists.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"ssrcss-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"ssrcss-3z08n3-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Additional contempt of court charges against the publications were also withdrawn.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-australia-55883738\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Some of Australia&#8217;s largest media groups have pleaded guilty to contempt of court over their coverage of Cardinal George Pell&#8217;s since-overturned conviction in a sexual abuse case.
