{"id":18085,"date":"2021-01-16T19:24:27","date_gmt":"2021-01-17T00:24:27","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=18085"},"modified":"2021-01-16T19:24:27","modified_gmt":"2021-01-17T00:24:27","slug":"hundreds-of-thousands-of-fingerprint-dna-and-arrest-records-accidentally-wiped","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2021\/01\/16\/hundreds-of-thousands-of-fingerprint-dna-and-arrest-records-accidentally-wiped\/","title":{"rendered":"Hundreds of thousands of fingerprint, DNA and arrest records accidentally wiped"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p><b class=\"css-14iz86j-BoldText e5tfeyi0\">Work to restore hundreds of thousands of fingerprint, DNA and arrest records accidentally wiped from police databases is ongoing, the Home Office has said.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Around 400,000 records were lost,\u00a0<a class=\"css-1xgj2ad-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.thetimes.co.uk\/edition\/news\/home-office-data-wipe-could-be-worse-than-first-thought-0hsrb7mvn\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">according to The Times<\/a>, which first reported the story.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The Home Office did not comment on how many records were likely to be restored, or how long it would take.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Home Secretary Priti Patel said the issue was &#8220;a result of human error&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Data was wiped from the Police National Computer (PNC) &#8211; which stores and shares criminal records information across the UK &#8211; after being inadvertently flagged for deletion.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The PNC is used in police investigations and provides real-time checks on people, vehicles and crimes, as well as whether suspects are wanted for any unsolved offences.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The coding that caused the problem was introduced in November 2020, and the deletions started earlier this week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Initially, it was thought some 150,000 records were lost, but it since has emerged the number could be significantly higher.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"unordered-list-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<div class=\"css-1pzprxn-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi3\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><a class=\"css-1xgj2ad-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-55672194\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Technical issue sees police records lost<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"css-1xgj2ad-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-55684320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Police probes compromised after records deleted<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Commenting on the error, Ms Patel said: &#8220;Engineers continue to work to restore data lost as a result of human error during a routine housekeeping process earlier this week.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>&#8220;I continue to be in regular contact with the team, and working with our policing partners, we will provide an update as soon as we can.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-mysbf6-ComponentWrapper-CrossheadComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"crosshead-block\">\n<h2 class=\"css-qozapo-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\">&#8216;Extraordinarily serious&#8217;<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Earlier, Labour shadow home secretary Nick Thomas-Symonds called on Ms Patel to take responsibility for the error and be clear about the impact it had had.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Speaking on BBC Breakfast, he described the situation as &#8220;extraordinarily serious&#8221;, adding: &#8220;Priti Patel will be responsible for criminals walking free.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>&#8220;We&#8217;re not going to be able to link suspects to crime scenes without the DNA and fingerprint evidence.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The\u00a0<a class=\"css-1xgj2ad-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-55684320\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">National Police Chiefs&#8217; Council said<\/a>\u00a0the lost data had resulted in a couple of &#8220;near misses&#8221; for serious crimes when trying to identify an offender.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Policing minister Kit Malthouse insisted the affected records &#8220;apply to cases where individuals were arrested and then released with no further action&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>He added: &#8220;We are working to recover the affected records as a priority.
