{"id":17897,"date":"2020-12-02T09:01:45","date_gmt":"2020-12-02T14:01:45","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=17897"},"modified":"2020-12-02T09:01:45","modified_gmt":"2020-12-02T14:01:45","slug":"conception-boat-fire-captain-charged-over-34-deaths-in-california","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2020\/12\/02\/conception-boat-fire-captain-charged-over-34-deaths-in-california\/","title":{"rendered":"Conception boat fire: Captain charged over 34 deaths in California"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p><b class=\"css-14iz86j-BoldText e5tfeyi0\">The captain of a scuba-diving boat that was destroyed by fire last year off California has been charged with 34 counts of seaman&#8217;s manslaughter.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Jerry Nehl Boylan caused the deaths of those aboard the Conception &#8220;by his misconduct, negligence and inattention to his duties&#8221;, says the indictment.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Prosecutors allege the 67 year old failed to have a night watchman or conduct fire drills as required by law.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>All 33 passengers and a crew member sleeping below deck died.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"unordered-list-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<div class=\"css-1pzprxn-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi3\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><a class=\"css-yidnqd-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-49582850\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Family of five among dead in California boat fire<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Mr Boylan was among five crew members who managed to escape the blaze on the 75-ft (23m) vessel off Santa Barbara on 2 September 2019.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>He is expected to surrender to the authorities at a later date. Each charge of seaman&#8217;s manslaughter carries up to 10 years in federal prison.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Kristi Johnson, assistant director of the FBI&#8217;s Los Angeles field office, said on Tuesday: &#8220;This tragedy forever altered the lives of so many families and loved ones, and it deeply affected members of the public who watched in horror. We continue to grieve with them.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>&#8220;Our hope is that this indictment leads to the prevention of boating accidents and the senseless destruction of lives through proper precautions and training.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Mr Boylan has not publicly commented on the charges.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-mysbf6-ComponentWrapper-CrossheadComponentWrapper e1xue1i84\" data-component=\"crosshead-block\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1jlqpzd-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\">What happened to the boat?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i83\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The fire broke out in the early hours of the morning while the Conception was moored in Platt&#8217;s Harbour near Santa Cruz Island, south of Santa Barbara.
