{"id":17817,"date":"2020-11-11T07:30:25","date_gmt":"2020-11-11T12:30:25","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=17817"},"modified":"2020-11-11T07:30:25","modified_gmt":"2020-11-11T12:30:25","slug":"hong-kong-pro-democracy-lawmakers-resign-after-china-ruling","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2020\/11\/11\/hong-kong-pro-democracy-lawmakers-resign-after-china-ruling\/","title":{"rendered":"Hong Kong pro-democracy lawmakers resign after China ruling"},"content":{"rendered":"<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p><b class=\"css-14iz86j-BoldText e5tfeyi0\">All Hong Kong&#8217;s pro-democracy lawmakers have resigned after Beijing forced the removal of four of their colleagues.<\/b><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>On Wednesday Beijing passed a resolution allowing the city&#8217;s government to dismiss politicians deemed a threat to national security.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Shortly afterwards the opposition lawmakers said they would leave the city legislature in solidarity.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>For the first time since Hong Kong was handed back to China in 1997 the body has almost no dissenting voices.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>BBC China correspondent Stephen McDonnell says the legislature was already stacked in favour of the pro-Beijing-camp.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Hong Kong Democratic Party chairman Wu Chi-wai told reporters: &#8220;We can no longer tell the world that we still have &#8216;one country, two systems&#8217;, this declares its official death.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Hong Kong &#8211; formerly a British colony &#8211; was returned to China under the &#8220;one country, two systems&#8221; principle, which allowed it to retain more rights and freedoms than the mainland until 2047.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"unordered-list-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<div class=\"css-1pzprxn-BulletListContainer e5tfeyi3\">\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><a class=\"css-yidnqd-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-china-54718434\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why students abroad fear Hong Kong&#8217;s new law<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"css-yidnqd-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-china-52765838\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">China&#8217;s new law: Why is Hong Kong worried?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"css-yidnqd-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-asia-china-53746867\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Hong Kong activist hailed as the &#8216;real Mulan&#8217;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The dismissal of the four legislators is being seen as the latest attempt by China to restrict Hong Kong&#8217;s freedoms, something Beijing denies.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>UK Foreign Secretary Dominic Raab has called the Chinese resolution &#8220;a further assault on Hong Kong&#8217;s high degree of autonomy and freedoms under the UK-China Joint Declaration&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>&#8220;This campaign to harass, stifle and disqualify democratic opposition tarnishes China&#8217;s international reputation and undermines Hong Kong&#8217;s long-term stability.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>China introduced a controversial and far-reaching national security law in Hong Kong in late June, which criminalised &#8220;secession, subversion and collusion with foreign forces&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The law was introduced after years of pro-democracy and anti-Beijing protests. Within hours of their disqualification, the remaining 15 announced they would resign en masse.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>&#8220;We&#8230; will stand with our colleagues who are disqualified. We will resign en masse,&#8221; the Democratic Party&#8217;s Wu Chi-wai said. Their letter of resignation will be submitted on Thursday.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>But Chinese foreign ministry spokesman Wang Wenbin said the disqualification of the four lawmakers was &#8220;rational, reasonable and in line with the constitution and laws&#8221;.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>&#8220;This was a necessary requirement for adhering to and improving on One Country, Two Systems, implementing Hong Kong&#8217;s Basic Law, as well as Hong Kong&#8217;s National Security Law,&#8221; he said at a news conference in Beijing.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The four men were among 12 legislators who were earlier barred from standing in a legislative election planned this year but delayed until 2021.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>The group had called on US officials to impose sanctions on those responsible for alleged human rights abuses in Hong Kong.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-mysbf6-ComponentWrapper-CrossheadComponentWrapper e1xue1i82\" data-component=\"crosshead-block\">\n<h2 class=\"css-1jlqpzd-StyledHeading e1fj1fc10\">What reasons are being given for the lawmakers&#8217; removal?<\/h2>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Speaking to the media, Carrie Lam said the four council members who were disqualified had already been found to not fulfil the requirements to stand in the now-postponed elections next year.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>She added that although she &#8220;welcomes diverse opinions in the Legislative Council&#8221; these had to be expressed &#8220;in a responsible manner&#8221;.<\/p>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>All members would have to be in line with the territory&#8217;s mini constitution, the Basic Law, and other local legislation including the new national security law, she said.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>&#8220;We could not allow members of the Legislative Council who have been judged not to fulfil the requirements to serve in the Legislative Council, to continue to serve there.&#8221;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>She also dismissed concerns that a mass resignation of the remaining pro-democracy lawmakers would turn the Legislative Council into a &#8220;rubberstamp&#8221; in recent times &#8211; used specific problems as a series of excuses to introduce wholesale, draconian changes which will remain in place long after whatever hurdle it is has been cleared.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>In this case, four legislators had, controversially, been ruled ineligible for the next Legislative Council election.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>However, because the term of the current legislature had been extended for a year, due to a delayed vote, they had been able to remain in their existing positions.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div class=\"css-uf6wea-RichTextComponentWrapper e1xue1i81\" data-component=\"text-block\">\n<div class=\"css-83cqas-RichTextContainer e5tfeyi2\">\n<p>Carrie Lam wanted them gone straight away so she says she asked Beijing to introduce a new law enabling their immediate dismissal.
