{"id":17554,"date":"2020-09-12T08:40:15","date_gmt":"2020-09-12T12:40:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=17554"},"modified":"2020-09-12T08:40:15","modified_gmt":"2020-09-12T12:40:15","slug":"iran-executes-young-wrestler-despite-global-outcry","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2020\/09\/12\/iran-executes-young-wrestler-despite-global-outcry\/","title":{"rendered":"Iran executes young wrestler despite global outcry"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Iran has executed a wrestler accused of murder, state media report, defying international appeals for him to be spared.<\/p>\n<p>Navid Afkari, 27, was sentenced to death over the murder of a security guard during a wave of anti-government protests in 2018.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had been tortured into making a confession.<\/p>\n<p>A union representing 85,000 athletes worldwide was among those to call for a stay of execution.<\/p>\n<p>The World Players Association said he had been &#8220;unjustly targeted&#8221; for taking part in the protests, and called for Iran&#8217;s expulsion from world sport if it went ahead with the execution.<\/p>\n<p>US President Donald Trump also appealed for mercy, saying the wrestler&#8217;s &#8220;sole act was an anti-government demonstration on the streets&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul role=\"list\">\n<li><a class=\"css-yidnqd-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-42544618\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why were there protests in Iran in 2018?<\/a><\/li>\n<li><a class=\"css-yidnqd-InlineLink e1no5rhv0\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-54002826\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Iran protesters &#8216;flogged and electrocuted&#8217;<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Afkari was executed by hanging in the southern city of Shiraz, state media report.<\/p>\n<p>His brothers Vahid and Habib were sentenced to 54 and 27 years in prison in the same case, according to human rights activists in Iran.<\/p>\n<p>In an audio recording leaked from the prison where he is being held, Afkari said he had been tortured. His mother said her sons were forced to testify against each other.<\/p>\n<p>The brothers&#8217; lawyer, Hassan Younesi, said on Twitter that contrary to Iranian news reports, there was no video of the moment of the security guard&#8217;s killing.
