{"id":17427,"date":"2020-08-05T21:29:19","date_gmt":"2020-08-06T01:29:19","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=17427"},"modified":"2020-08-05T21:29:19","modified_gmt":"2020-08-06T01:29:19","slug":"walter-lubcke-man-on-trial-admits-to-killing-german-politician","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2020\/08\/05\/walter-lubcke-man-on-trial-admits-to-killing-german-politician\/","title":{"rendered":"Walter L\u00fcbcke: Man on trial admits to killing German politician"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A man on trial in Germany for the murder of pro-migrant Christian Democrat politician Walter L\u00fcbcke has told the court he fired the fatal shot.<\/p>\n<p>Far-right sympathiser Stephan Ernst previously admitted to killing L\u00fcbcke, but later withdrew his admission.<\/p>\n<p>L\u00fcbcke was shot in the head at close range in his garden in Istha last June.<\/p>\n<p>If a political motive of far-right extremism is proven, it would be the first such killing of a politician in the country&#8217;s post-war history.<\/p>\n<p>L\u00fcbcke, 65, was the head of the regional council in the German city of Kassel. He was known nationally for supporting Chancellor Angela Merkel&#8217;s call to take in refugees in 2015.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-53062176\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Far-right suspects in court over politician&#8217;s murder<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-48716944\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">German politician&#8217;s murder raises spectre of far-right attacks<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>During a town hall meeting that year he called for audience members to stand up for Christian values.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Whoever does not support these values can leave this country any time, if he doesn&#8217;t agree. This is the freedom of every German,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/B5FF\/production\/_107219564_054407277-1.jpg\" alt=\"File pic from 2012 shows the administrative chief of the western city of Kassel Walter L\u00fcbcke\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Walter L\u00fcbcke was shot in the head with a short-range weapon in June 2019 (Image: AFP)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Ernst and co-defendant Markus H, who is accused of giving Ernst firearms training, allegedly attended that meeting.<\/p>\n<p>According to prosecutors, it was after that meeting that Ernst &#8220;increasingly projected his hatred of foreigners on to L\u00fcbcke.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>On Wednesday, Ernst told the Higher Regional Court in Frankfurt am Main: &#8220;I fired the shot.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He claimed he acted with Markus H. However prosecutors say they do not think Markus H was present at the scene of the crime.<\/p>\n<p>Addressing L\u00fcbcke&#8217;s family, Ernst said that he was guided by &#8220;wrong thoughts&#8221; and\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.spiegel.de\/panorama\/justiz\/mordfall-walter-luebcke-stephan-ernst-gesteht-toedlichen-schuss-auf-luebcke-a-8f17adf1-953e-4743-9006-a5a4493986bb\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">took responsibility for it.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Nobody should die because they have a different opinion,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators have also charged Ernst with attempted murder over the stabbing of an Iraqi asylum seeker in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>He is known to have had links to neo-Nazi networks and investigators are exploring a possible connection to the National Socialist Underground (NSU) &#8211; an extremist group which shot dead 10 people, most of whom had migrant backgrounds, between 2000 and 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Germany has seen a rise in support for the far right, especially in the country&#8217;s formerly-communist east.<\/p>\n<p>There are 24,000 right-wing extremists in Germany, according to government figures. Nearly 13,000 are believed to have a tendency towards violence.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities have\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-51526357\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">stepped up their crackdown on the country&#8217;s underground far-right\u00a0<\/a>following the politician&#8217;s murder and an attack on a synagogue in the eastern city of Halle last year.<\/p>\n<p>Horst Seehofer, the country&#8217;s Interior Minister, has vowed to be tougher on security measures and has promised to crackdown on hate speech.<\/p>\n<p>He recently declared far-right extremism the &#8220;biggest security threat facing Germany.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-53662899\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A man on trial in Germany for the murder of pro-migrant Christian Democrat politician Walter L\u00fcbcke has told the court he fired the fatal shot.
