{"id":17186,"date":"2020-06-07T08:45:51","date_gmt":"2020-06-07T12:45:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=17186"},"modified":"2020-06-07T08:45:51","modified_gmt":"2020-06-07T12:45:51","slug":"vatican-arrest-man-over-luxury-property-deal","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2020\/06\/07\/vatican-arrest-man-over-luxury-property-deal\/","title":{"rendered":"Vatican arrest man over luxury property deal"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">An Italian businessman who helped the Vatican to buy luxury property in London in a controversial deal has been arrested by Vatican police.<\/p>\n<p>Gianluigi Torzi is accused of extortion, embezzlement, aggravated fraud and money laundering in relation to the $200m (\u00a3160m) deal.<\/p>\n<p>He is being held in Vatican police barracks, and faces up to 12 years in prison if found guilty.<\/p>\n<p>The 2018 purchase of the building is subject to an ongoing investigation.<\/p>\n<p>The apartment block on Sloane Avenue, in London&#8217;s exclusive Chelsea, had been bought with church money by the Secretariat of State, the body charged with the Vatican&#8217;s diplomatic and political functions.<\/p>\n<p>But it is alleged the price was greatly inflated.<\/p>\n<p>In October, police raided the Secretariat&#8217;s office and seized documents and computers, and the Vatican suspended five officials, barring them from the city state.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-23289297\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The Vatican bank is rocked by scandal again<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-34889540\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vatican leaks scandal: Five people charged<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Pope Francis suggested that parts of the deal made were corrupt, saying &#8220;they have done things that do not seem clean&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Secretariat of State is in control of millions of dollars donated by Catholics across the world.<\/p>\n<p>An internal Vatican memo about the investigation into the five officials was leaked to the media, after which the\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-50045101\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Vatican Head of Police resigned<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In February computers and documents belonging to senior financial official Alberto Perlasca were seized by Vatican police.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this week, the Pope issued a new law designed to boost transparency in Vatican&#8217;s financial deals.
