Police ruled it a suicide.<\/p>\n<p>However, later inquiries concluded he had been killed in a hate crime. This also drew attention to other cases of homophobic killings around Sydney&#8217;s beaches in the 1980s.<\/p>\n<p>Scott Price, 49, was arrested at his Sydney home on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>He was refused bail and will face a court on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>The New South Wales police chief said it was a &#8220;career highlight&#8221; to call Scott Johnson&#8217;s brother, Steve, who lives in the US, to inform him of the arrest.<\/p>\n<p>The police force has previously apologised to the family for not investigating the case properly in the 1980s and failing to protect the gay community.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;While we have a long way to go in the legal process, it must be acknowledged that if it wasn&#8217;t for the determination of the Johnson family&#8230; we wouldn&#8217;t be where we are today,&#8221; Commissioner Mick Fuller said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;He needed me to do this&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>Scott, a gifted University of Cambridge maths student, had moved from the US to Sydney to be with his partner in 1986.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_17076\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-17076\" style=\"width: 660px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Scott-Johnson.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-17076\" src=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Scott-Johnson.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"660\" height=\"371\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Scott-Johnson.jpg 660w, https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2020\/05\/Scott-Johnson-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 660px) 100vw, 660px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-17076\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Scott Johnson&#8217;s death was only recently re-investigated as a gay hate crime<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>He had been close to completing his PhD when he was found dead at the bottom of the North Head cliffs in Manly.<\/p>\n<p>His brother Steve campaigned for decades for the case to be re-investigated.\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/newsbeat-46565964\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">He told the BBC in 2018 it was &#8220;inconceivable&#8221; that his brother had jumped off a cliff.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a very emotional day,&#8221; he said in a video message on Tuesday.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;He was my best friend and he really needed me to do this.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/1402B\/production\/_112236918_steve-2.png\" alt=\"Steve Johnson\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Steve Johnson said the arrest was &#8220;great news&#8221; after 32 years of fighting for answers<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Family petitions sparked coroner investigations in 2012 and 2015 which both recommended police reopen the case.<\/p>\n<p>However no action was taken until a third inquiry in 2017 where the coroner found Scott had died as a result of a gay hate crime. Police offered a A$1m (\u00a3570,000; $645,000) cash reward in 2018 for information about the case.<\/p>\n<p>Two months ago the family doubled the reward to A$2m.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s now estimated up to 80 gay men were murdered by homophobic gangs in and around Sydney in the late 1980s &#8211; with many pushed off cliffs.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Johnson said he hoped the arrest &#8220;opens the door&#8221; for others to receive justice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I hope the family and friends of the other dozens of gay men who lost their lives find solace in what&#8217;s happened today,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-australia-52627955\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Australian police have charged a man with the decades-old murder of a gay US student in Sydney.
