{"id":17038,"date":"2020-05-07T07:23:11","date_gmt":"2020-05-07T11:23:11","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=17038"},"modified":"2020-05-07T07:23:11","modified_gmt":"2020-05-07T11:23:11","slug":"ruth-bader-ginsburg-us-supreme-court-justice-returns-to-work-from-hospital-bed","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2020\/05\/07\/ruth-bader-ginsburg-us-supreme-court-justice-returns-to-work-from-hospital-bed\/","title":{"rendered":"Ruth Bader Ginsburg: US Supreme Court Justice returns to work from hospital bed"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">US Supreme Court Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg has taken part in legal arguments from her hospital bed, just a day after she was admitted with a gallbladder condition.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ginsburg, 87, participated in two cases shortly after receiving non-surgical treatment for an infection.<\/p>\n<p>A court spokeswoman earlier said she was &#8220;resting comfortably&#8221; at Baltimore&#8217;s Johns Hopkins Hospital.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ginsburg was discharged from hospital late on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ginsburg was &#8220;doing well and glad to be home&#8221;, court spokeswoman Kathy Arberg said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>As the court&#8217;s most senior liberal justice, her health is closely watched.<\/p>\n<p>She has received hospital treatment a number of times in recent years, but has returned swiftly to work on each occasion.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-46145777\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why half of America panics when this woman falls ill<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/magazine-33103973\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Meet the Supremes &#8211; the judges on the top US court<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-38707720\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Why is the US top court so important?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Supreme Court justices serve for life or until they choose to retire, and supporters have expressed concern that if anything were to happen to Ms Ginsburg then a more conservative judge might replace her.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump has appointed two judges since taking office, and the current court is seen to have a 5-4 conservative majority in most cases.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ginsburg was treated for an inflammatory condition of the gallbladder known as acute cholecystitis on Tuesday afternoon, Ms Arberg said in an earlier statement.<\/p>\n<p>The court&#8217;s justices heard oral arguments by telephone on Wednesday due to the coronavirus outbreak. They considered a case relating to the Affordable Care Act and another relating to federal law on automated calls.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Ginsburg&#8217;s voice was reported to be weaker than normal, but picked up as the proceedings went on.<\/p>\n<p>She posed lengthy questions during the first case, which concerned a requirement that employers cover birth control in their health insurance plans.<\/p>\n<p>President Donald Trump&#8217;s administration changed this law in 2017 and allowed employers to obtain a religious exemption, but this has been challenged in the courts.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You have just tossed entirely to the wind what Congress thought was essential, that women be provided these services with no hassle [at] no cost to them,&#8221; Ms Ginsburg told the Trump administration&#8217;s lawyer on Wednesday.<\/p>\n<p>Social media users pointed out that at one point in the call the sound of a flushing toilet could be heard, suggesting the dangers of teleconferencing can also affect America&#8217;s highest court.<\/p>\n<div class=\"social-embed\">\n<div class=\"social-embed-post social-embed-fallbacktwitter embed-image-wrap\">\n<figure class=\"media-landscape full-width embed-screenshot-js\"><a class=\"embed-original-post-link\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/cspanJeremy\/status\/1258076164234579969?s=20\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/485\/socialembed\/https:\/\/twitter.com\/cspanJeremy\/status\/1258076164234579969?s=20~\/news\/world-us-canada-52567557\" alt=\"Twitter post by @cspanJeremy: LISTEN  Toilet flush during U.S. Supreme Court oral argument (h\/t @nicninh) \" width=\"465\" height=\"461\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"485\" \/><\/span><\/a><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/94C2\/production\/_109028083_1px_white_line-nc.png\" alt=\"Presentational white space\" width=\"624\" height=\"1\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Ms Ginsburg is the oldest sitting justice on the Supreme Court, and has suffered a number of recent health scares.<\/p>\n<p>Last November,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-50534140\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">she was taken to hospital after suffering chills and a fever<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>In August, she was treated for a cancerous tumour on her pancreas. She received treatment for colon cancer in 1999, and pancreatic cancer in 2009.<\/p>\n<p>And in December 2018, she had surgery to remove two cancerous nodules from her lung.
