{"id":17016,"date":"2020-05-02T16:54:49","date_gmt":"2020-05-02T20:54:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=17016"},"modified":"2020-05-02T16:54:49","modified_gmt":"2020-05-02T20:54:49","slug":"honduras-ex-police-chief-faces-us-drug-trafficking-charges","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2020\/05\/02\/honduras-ex-police-chief-faces-us-drug-trafficking-charges\/","title":{"rendered":"Honduras ex-police chief faces US drug trafficking charges"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A former chief of the Honduran National Police is facing drug trafficking charges in the US, the latest drug case against a top official of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutors said Juan Carlos Bonilla Valladares, known as &#8220;El Tigre&#8221;, helped ship tons of cocaine to the US on behalf of Honduran President Juan Orlando Hern\u00e1ndez and his brother.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Bonilla, who is not in US custody, denied the accusations.<\/p>\n<p>The Honduran presidency said the claims were &#8220;100% false&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>President Hern\u00e1ndez has not been charged with any crime in the US and has consistently denied suggestions of involvement in drug trafficking and taking bribes.<\/p>\n<p>His brother, Juan Antonio Hern\u00e1ndez, known as Tony, was found guilty of US drug trafficking charges last year and is due to be sentenced in June.<\/p>\n<p>During the trial, one witness\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-49915690\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">said Juan Antonio Hern\u00e1ndez took $1m (\u00a3800,000) from jailed Mexican drug lord Joaqu\u00edn &#8220;El Chapo&#8221; Guzm\u00e1n<\/a>\u00a0that was meant to reach the Honduran leader.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-49915690\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">El Chapo &#8216;gave $1m to Honduran president&#8217;s brother&#8217;<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-35271257\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">How El Chapo fell victim to his own legend<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Prosecutors in New York said Mr Bonilla oversaw the multi-tonne shipments of cocaine bound for the US, was involved in &#8220;extreme violence&#8221;
