{"id":16891,"date":"2020-04-05T08:03:40","date_gmt":"2020-04-05T12:03:40","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=16891"},"modified":"2020-04-05T08:03:40","modified_gmt":"2020-04-05T12:03:40","slug":"new-safe-space-for-child-victims-of-crime-in-scotland","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2020\/04\/05\/new-safe-space-for-child-victims-of-crime-in-scotland\/","title":{"rendered":"New safe space for child victims of crime in Scotland"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A new centre designed to support child victims and witnesses of crime is to be opened in Scotland.<\/p>\n<p>Children will be able to be interviewed in the child-friendly facility, away from police stations and courtrooms.<\/p>\n<p>But they can also receive medical care and support to help them recover from trauma in an environment designed to look like a family home.<\/p>\n<p>Locations are being scouted for the base following a \u00a31.5m boost from the People&#8217;s Postcode Lottery.<\/p>\n<p>Project partner Children 1st said the centre would &#8220;end the nightmares of thousands of children&#8221;.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-43960379\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Could the Barnahus model work in Scotland?<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-51154491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">New law to protect children giving evidence in court<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The charity&#8217;s chief executive Mary Glasgow said the centre would &#8220;transform&#8221; Scotland&#8217;s systems of justice, health, care and protection.<\/p>\n<p>She added: &#8220;We and our partners want to offer our heartfelt thanks to the players of People&#8217;s Postcode Lottery. With their help, we will offer children and their families the support they need to recover, repair and move on with their lives.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Along with Children 1st, the project will have input from Victim Support Scotland, Children England and the University of Edinburgh.<\/p>\n<p>Kate Wallace, of Victim Support Scotland, highlighted the &#8220;heartbreaking harm&#8221; that children experience through court processes and procedures.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">The Scandinavian model<\/h2>\n<p>The design of the centre is based on the Scandinavian model of Barnahus &#8211; or &#8220;children&#8217;s house&#8221; &#8211; which provides a welcoming and safe environment for children.<\/p>\n<p>Iceland first opened one such centre in 1998 followed by Sweden, Norway, Greenland and most recently, Denmark in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>Centres operate on the principle that the needs of children in criminal cases are totally different from adults in the same situation.<\/p>\n<p>The Child&#8217;s House for Healing in Scotland aims to reduce the number of times a child needs to talk about trauma they experienced in order to help speed up the recovery process.<\/p>\n<p>Children will be able to give evidence, receive medical care, get support and take part in decisions about their protection.<\/p>\n<p>Every year 12,600 children in Scotland require special support to give evidence in court.<\/p>\n<p>In January a\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-51154491\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">new law came into force in Scotland<\/a>\u00a0which spares under 18s from giving evidence during High Court trials.<\/p>\n<p>Justice Secretary Humza Yousaf said the Scottish government was committed to bringing forward Scottish Barnahus standards for child victims<\/p>\n<p>He said: &#8220;We continue to work hard to provide trauma-informed support to children and young people who are the victims of serious and traumatic crime but there is always more which can be done.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-52164397\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A new centre designed to support child victims and witnesses of crime is to be opened in Scotland.
