{"id":16645,"date":"2020-02-20T18:11:35","date_gmt":"2020-02-20T23:11:35","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=16645"},"modified":"2020-02-20T18:11:35","modified_gmt":"2020-02-20T23:11:35","slug":"roger-stone-disgusted-judge-jails-trump-ally","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2020\/02\/20\/roger-stone-disgusted-judge-jails-trump-ally\/","title":{"rendered":"Roger Stone: &#8216;Disgusted&#8217; judge jails Trump ally"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A judge has expressed &#8220;disgust&#8221; at US President Donald Trump&#8217;s former adviser Roger Stone, as she sentenced him to 40 months in prison.<\/p>\n<p>Stone, 67, was found guilty in November on seven counts of lying to Congress, obstruction and witness tampering.<\/p>\n<p>The judge said Stone threatened her, but Mr Trump said he should be cleared.<\/p>\n<p>He is the sixth Trump aide convicted on charges linked to a justice department inquiry that found Russian attempts to boost Mr Trump&#8217;s 2016 campaign.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What was Stone convicted of?<\/h2>\n<p>Stone was found guilty of lying to the House Intelligence Committee about his attempts to contact Wikileaks, the website that released damaging emails about Mr Trump&#8217;s 2016 Democratic election rival Hillary Clinton.<\/p>\n<p>US intelligence officials have concluded the messages were stolen by Russian hackers.<\/p>\n<p>Stone will serve two years&#8217; probation after his custodial sentence. He has also been fined $20,000 (\u00a315,500) and must serve 250 hours of community service.<\/p>\n<p>He will not have to report to prison until the judge rules on a pending defence appeal.<\/p>\n<p>Stone&#8217;s sentence fell short of an initial seven- to nine-year recommendation from prosecutors.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What did the judge say?<\/h2>\n<p>Speaking in her Washington DC court on Thursday, Judge Amy Berman Jackson said Stone had engaged in &#8220;threatening and intimidating conduct&#8221; towards her.<\/p>\n<p>She said Stone &#8220;knew exactly what he was doing&#8221; when he posted an image on social media last year of a gun&#8217;s crosshairs next to her head.<\/p>\n<p>Stone had claimed he thought the crosshairs were a Celtic cross.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/1579\/production\/_110979450_stonerpost.jpg\" alt=\"The image of Judge Amy Berman Jackson that Roger Stone posted to Instagram\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Stone said he thought the crosshairs actually depicted a Celtic cross (Image: Instagram)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is intolerable to the rule of justice,&#8221; she said. &#8220;The court cannot just sit idly by and say &#8216;that&#8217;s just Roger being Roger.'&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Judge Jackson also said Stone &#8220;was not prosecuted for standing up for the president, he was prosecuted for covering up for the president&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>She continued: &#8220;The dismay and disgust at the defendant&#8217;s belligerence should transcend party.&#8221;<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-47002918\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Roger Stone: Trump ally and Russia probe defendant<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>&#8220;At his core, Mr Stone is an insecure person who craves and recklessly pursues attention.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>She said the politics surrounding the case did not inform her ultimate decision.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The truth still exists. The truth still matters,&#8221; she said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What politics was the judge referring to?<\/h2>\n<p>After prosecutors last week recommended a sentence of seven to nine years, Mr Trump tweeted that such a prison term would be &#8220;very horrible and unfair&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The Department of Justice then swiftly said it planned to reduce the amount of prison time sought for Stone.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-51469717\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Prosecutors quit Roger Stone case over dispute<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>This led all four prosecutors on the case to quit, one leaving the justice department entirely.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, Judge Jackson called the justice department intervention &#8220;unprecedented&#8221;.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What did Stone&#8217;s lawyer say?<\/h2>\n<p>The defendant&#8217;s attorney, Seth Ginsberg, said that despite his client&#8217;s image as a &#8220;dirty trickster&#8221;, he was a spiritual man, devoted to his family.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Mr Stone is, in fact, not simply that public persona, but a human being,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Ginsberg had argued that Stone should get no prison time.<\/p>\n<p>Stone declined to speak at Thursday&#8217;s hearing.
