{"id":16438,"date":"2020-01-23T19:29:55","date_gmt":"2020-01-24T00:29:55","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=16438"},"modified":"2020-01-23T19:41:35","modified_gmt":"2020-01-24T00:41:35","slug":"harry-dunn-us-rejects-uk-extradition-request","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2020\/01\/23\/harry-dunn-us-rejects-uk-extradition-request\/","title":{"rendered":"Harry Dunn: US rejects UK extradition request"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The US has turned down an extradition request for one of its citizens to be charged over the death of motorcyclist Harry Dunn.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Dunn, 19, died after a crash in Northamptonshire in August which led to the suspect, Anne Sacoolas, leaving for the US under diplomatic immunity.<\/p>\n<p>The Home Office started extradition proceedings on charges of causing the death by dangerous driving.<\/p>\n<p>A spokeswoman said the decision by the US &#8220;appears to be a denial of justice&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The US Secretary of State Mike Pompeo turned down the extradition request in an email to the UK Government, family spokesman Radd Seiger said.<\/p>\n<p>He said the family would react fully to the news on Friday morning, adding &#8220;the fight goes on&#8221; for justice for their son.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Highly inappropriate&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p>The family&#8217;s constituency MP Andrea Leadsom is due to meet the US ambassador Woody Johnson in London on Friday to discuss the case.<\/p>\n<p>When the Home Office started extradition proceedings the US State Department said the request would be &#8220;highly inappropriate&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>It insisted Ms Sacoolas&#8217; status at the time of the crash meant she had diplomatic immunity.<\/p>\n<p>Prime minister Boris Johnson previously said the chance of the suspect ever returning to the UK was very low.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/1830C\/production\/_110248099_diplomatwife.jpg\" alt=\"Anne Sacoolas\" width=\"976\" height=\"700\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Anne Sacoolas pictured on her wedding day in 2003 (Image: Aiken Standard Archive)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Seiger said &#8220;no reason&#8221; was given by Mr Pompeo in rejecting the extradition request.<\/p>\n<p>He also said that the family had expected the decision, adding: &#8220;We knew this day was coming. It is no surprise.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>However, he said the family would continue its campaign, and that the extradition request &#8220;hangs there forever&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I can assure you that Anne Sicoolas will be coming back one day,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is far from over.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>A spokeswoman for the Home Office said: &#8220;We are disappointed in this decision which appears to be a denial of justice.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We are urgently considering our options.&#8221;<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/15788\/production\/_110244978_pressconferencedunn.jpg\" alt=\"Charlotte Charles, Harry Dunn's mother\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Mr Dunn&#8217;s family said they would react fully to the news on Friday morning<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Dunn died after his motorbike was in collision with a car owned by Mrs Sacoolas.<\/p>\n<p>The crash happened outside RAF Croughton where Mrs Sacoolas&#8217; husband Jonathan worked as an intelligence officer.<\/p>\n<p>The 42-year-old left the UK and returned to her native US, claiming diplomatic immunity.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement released on behalf of the suspect after she was charged in December, Mrs Sacoolas&#8217;s lawyers said: &#8220;Anne will not return voluntarily to the United Kingdom to face a potential jail sentence for what was a terrible but unintentional accident.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-northamptonshire-51228262\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">The US has turned down an extradition request for one of its citizens to be charged over the death of motorcyclist Harry Dunn.
