In November,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-50557511\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">13 French troops died in a helicopter collision<\/a>\u00a0during an operation in southern Mali, near the border with Burkina Faso.<\/p>\n<div class=\"idt2\">\n<div data-idt-uuid=\"c6f539ed-31ca-490c-900c-d6ed73f301f8\">\n<div class=\"SimpleMapGraphic__GraphicContainer-s1ketwac-0 dXwefP renderReady\" dir=\"ltr\" data-graphicuuid=\"c6f539ed-31ca-490c-900c-d6ed73f301f8\"><img decoding=\"async\" src=\"https:\/\/news.files.bbci.co.uk\/include\/idt2\/assets\/c6f539ed-31ca-490c-900c-d6ed73f301f8_wide_fallback\" \/><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Last weekend, French President Emmanuel Macron highlighted the fight against militants in the Sahel region during a visit to Niger.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The coming weeks are absolutely decisive for our fight against terrorism,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-39279050\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">What&#8217;s behind Burkina Faso attacks?<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Tuesday&#8217;s attack was carried out by dozens of fighters on motorbikes and lasted several hours. No group has so far said it was behind it, but groups allied to al-Qaeda or Islamic State are active in the region.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This barbaric attack resulted in the deaths of 35 civilian victims, most of them women,&#8221; President Kabor\u00e9 said in a statement. He also praised the &#8220;heroic action of our soldiers&#8221; who battled the assailants.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, at least 14 people were killed after gunmen opened fire inside a church in the east of the country.<\/p>\n<p>Burkina Faso, a predominantly Muslim country, was once relatively stable but has descended into serious unrest since 2015.
