{"id":16145,"date":"2019-12-06T03:17:39","date_gmt":"2019-12-06T08:17:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=16145"},"modified":"2019-12-06T03:17:39","modified_gmt":"2019-12-06T08:17:39","slug":"evil-corp-us-charges-russians-over-hacking-attacks","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2019\/12\/06\/evil-corp-us-charges-russians-over-hacking-attacks\/","title":{"rendered":"Evil Corp: US charges Russians over hacking attacks"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">US authorities have filed charges against two Russian nationals alleged to be running a global cyber crime organisation named Evil Corp.<\/p>\n<p>An indictment named Maksim Yakubets and Igor Turashev &#8211; who remain at large &#8211; as figures in a group which used malware to steal millions of dollars in more than 40 countries.<\/p>\n<p>Those affected by the hacks include schools and religious organisations.<\/p>\n<p>It is also alleged that Mr Yakubets worked for Russian intelligence.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking at a news conference, Assistant Attorney General Brian Benczkowski said the attacks were among &#8220;the worst computer hacking and bank fraud schemes of the past decade&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Yakubets is accused of leading Moscow-based Evil Corp, while Mr Turashev allegedly acted as an administrator. The pair are thought to be in Russia.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Largest reward yet for cyber-criminal<\/h2>\n<p>Thursday&#8217;s indictment came after a multi-year investigation by the FBI, and by Britain&#8217;s National Crime Agency (NCA) and Cyber Security Centre.<\/p>\n<p>US authorities allege that the group stole at least $100m (\u00a376m) using Bugat malware &#8211; known as Dridex.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/4CA6\/production\/_110022691_ephoto21.jpg\" alt=\"Sports cars\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Alleged members of Evil Corp have shares images of personalised sports cars on their social media accounts (Image: NCA)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The malware was spread through so-called &#8220;phishing&#8221; campaigns, which encouraged victims to click on malicious links sent by email from supposedly trusted entities.<\/p>\n<p>Once a computer was infected, the group stole personal banking information which was used to transfer funds.<\/p>\n<p>A network of money launderers &#8211; targeted by the NCA and Britain&#8217;s Metropolitan Police &#8211; were then utilised to funnel the criminal proceeds to members of Evil Corp. Eight members of this network have been sentenced to a total of over 40 years in prison.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/9AC6\/production\/_110022693_ephoto16.png\" alt=\"A photo from Maksim Yakubets' wedding\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">The NCA alleges that Maksim Yakubets spent \u00a3250,000 on his wedding (Image: NCA)<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>US authorities said Mr Yakubets was also involved in a similar scheme using another form of malware &#8211; known as Zeus &#8211; which stole $70m from victims&#8217; bank accounts.<\/p>\n<p>The NCA alleged that Maksim Yakubets spent more than \u00a3250,000 ($328,971) of criminal proceeds on his wedding. He is also said to drive a customised Lamborghini with a personalised number plate which reads &#8220;Thief&#8221; in Russian.<\/p>\n<p>In a separate statement, the US Treasury alleged that, since 2017, Mr Yakubets had worked on projects for the Russian state, including the theft of confidential documents and &#8220;cyber-enabled operations&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The department said it had rolled out sanctions against 17 individuals and seven &#8220;entities,&#8221; including businesses associated with a member of the group.<\/p>\n<p>A $5m reward has been offered for information leading to their arrest and prosecution.
