{"id":15920,"date":"2019-11-02T19:55:07","date_gmt":"2019-11-02T23:55:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=15920"},"modified":"2019-11-02T19:55:07","modified_gmt":"2019-11-02T23:55:07","slug":"brazil-amazon-land-defender-killed-by-illegal-loggers","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2019\/11\/02\/brazil-amazon-land-defender-killed-by-illegal-loggers\/","title":{"rendered":"Brazil: Amazon land defender killed by illegal loggers"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A young indigenous land defender has been shot dead and another wounded by illegal loggers in Brazil&#8217;s Amazon.<\/p>\n<p>Paulo Paulino Guajajara was reportedly attacked and shot in the head while hunting on Friday inside the Arariboia reservation in Maranhao state.<\/p>\n<p>He was a member of Guardians of the Forest, a group formed to combat logging gangs in the area.<\/p>\n<p>The killing increases concerns about escalating violence against Amazon forest protectors.<\/p>\n<p>Non-profit group Survival International, which advocates for isolated communities, says at least three Guardians have previously been killed, along with many of their relatives.<\/p>\n<p>In September, an official who had worked to protect indigenous people\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-latin-america-49633136\">was murdered in the city of Tabatinga.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s populist President Jair Bolsonaro has drawn intense domestic and international criticism for failing to protect the Guardians&#8217; territory in the eastern Amazon region.<\/p>\n<p>He has often stated support for farmers and loggers working in the area, while criticising environmental campaigners and slashing the budget of the Brazil&#8217;s environmental agency.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s justice minister S\u00e9rgio Moro said federal police were investigating the incident. &#8220;We will spare no effort to bring those responsible for this serious crime to justice,&#8221; he tweeted.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What happened to Paulo Paulino Guajajara?<\/h2>\n<p>Authorities say he was shot in the head during an ambush by illegal loggers who had invaded the reservation.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/11B7A\/production\/_109507527_mediaitem109507526.jpg\" alt=\"Paulo Paulino Guajajara holds a gun during the search for illegal loggers in September\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Paulo Paulino Guajajara holds a gun during a search for illegal loggers in September<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Another indigenous man, Tainaky Tenetehar, was injured in the attack.<\/p>\n<p>Brazilian police said one of the loggers was also killed in a subsequent shootout.<\/p>\n<p>Brazil&#8217;s pan-indigenous organization APIB said Paulo Paulino Guajajara&#8217;s body was still lying in the forest where he was gunned down.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What has the reaction been?<\/h2>\n<p>The APIB, which represents many of Brazil&#8217;s 900,000 indigenous people, said Mr Bolsonaro&#8217;s government had serious questions to answer.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The Bolsonaro government has indigenous blood on its hands,&#8221; it said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The increase in violence in indigenous territories is a direct result of his hateful speeches and steps taken against our people.&#8221;<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Who was Paulo Paulino Guajajara?<\/h2>\n<p>The land defender, who was in his late twenties and had a son, was a Guajajara leader.<\/p>\n<p>The Guajajaras are one of Brazil&#8217;s largest indigenous groups with some 20,000 people. In 2012, they started the Guardians of the Forest to protect the Arariboia Indigenous Territory.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;m scared at times, but we have to lift up our heads and act.
