{"id":15292,"date":"2019-08-11T08:57:43","date_gmt":"2019-08-11T12:57:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=15292"},"modified":"2019-08-11T08:57:43","modified_gmt":"2019-08-11T12:57:43","slug":"canada-cable-car-cord-severed-in-likely-act-of-sabotage-police-say","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2019\/08\/11\/canada-cable-car-cord-severed-in-likely-act-of-sabotage-police-say\/","title":{"rendered":"Canada cable car cord severed in likely act of sabotage, police say"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Canadian police are investigating after a cable car gondola was sabotaged in an apparent act of vandalism.<\/p>\n<p>Almost all of the 30 cars on the Sea-to-Sky gondola in Squamish, north of Vancouver, fell to the ground.<\/p>\n<p>Police believe someone deliberately cut the cables in the early hours of Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>The company said the incident happened at around 04:30 local time (11:30 GMT), when the line was closed, and no injuries were reported as a result.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/british-columbia\/squamish-gondola-falls-1.5242787\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">The tourist attraction&#8217;s manager told Canadian broadcaster CBC<\/a>\u00a0that maintenance on the line had been conducted recently &#8220;and it was a big, thick, beautiful healthy rope&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The rope is a multi-strand steel cable, 55mm (2.2 inches) across.<\/p>\n<p>Police said that technical safety experts were assessing the line.<\/p>\n<p>Inspector Kara Triance told CBC experts would know the difference between a faulty cable and one that was cut deliberately.<\/p>\n<p>She added that the person responsible put themselves in &#8220;extreme jeopardy&#8221; if they had climbed a maintenance pole \u2013 but also because the steel cable unravelling under tension would have been very dangerous.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We recognize the potential of what could have been and are thankful that no one was injured,&#8221; police said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>The Sea to Sky operator, meanwhile, says that the gondola is closed &#8220;for the foreseeable future&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Police are asking for any hikers, climbers, or campers who were in the area to contact them.<\/p>\n<p>The gondola has 30 cars, each of which can carry eight passengers on the 10-minute ride to the top, 885m (2,900ft) above sea level.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-49310590\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Canadian police are investigating after a cable car gondola was sabotaged in an apparent act of vandalism.
