Nine people have been killed and at least 16 injured in a mass shooting in Dayton, Ohio, police have confirmed.<\/p>\n
First reports came in at about 01:00 local time (05:00 GMT) of a shooting outside a bar in the Oregon district of the city.<\/p>\n
Police confirmed they killed the shooter at the scene. Casualties have been taken to a number of hospitals.<\/p>\n
The incident came only hours after a mass shooting in El Paso, Texas<\/a>\u00a0which left at least 20 people dead.<\/p>\n “We had officers in the immediate vicinity when this shooting began and were able to respond and put an end to it quickly,”\u00a0Dayton Police Department wrote in a tweet<\/a>. The authorities have appealed for witnesses.<\/p>\n Assistant Police Chief Matt Carper told reporters that officers on patrol managed to take down the shooter.<\/p>\n “Our people are very well trained for a situation like this,” he said, adding it was “very fortunate that the officers were in close proximity”.<\/p>\n Nothing is yet known about him, but Officer Carper said they were “anxious to discover” a motivation.<\/p>\n Footage posted on social media showed people running as dozens of gunshots echoed through the streets.<\/p>\n It is thought the shooting took place outside Ned Peppers Bar on E 5th Street. A note saying staff members were safe appeared on\u00a0Ned Peppers Instagram page<\/a> and on the nearby\u00a0Hole in the Wall bar’s Facebook page<\/a>.<\/p>\n Jae Williams told the BBC he was at a nearby rap performance when they were told to evacuate.<\/p>\n “I was very shocked,” he said. “We all evacuated quickly and safely. We were told to avoid the Oregon district.”<\/p>\n “I got to my car, I could see cops, multiple ambulances. When I drove past I saw a lot of cops and ambulances.”<\/p>\n Emergency services gathered at the corner of E 5th Street and Wayne Avenue in the wake of the shooting.<\/p>\n FBI agents are also at the scene to help in the investigation.<\/p>\n People on social media reacted in shock as another mass shooting occurred in the US.<\/p>\n On Twitter, singer Lizzo<\/a> called on people not to “normalise” shootings, saying that her family in Dayton were safe “but that’s not the case for 9 other families”.<\/p>\n The Dayton mass shooting came within hours of the incident in the border city of El Paso.
