{"id":14556,"date":"2019-05-06T10:24:26","date_gmt":"2019-05-06T14:24:26","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=14556"},"modified":"2019-05-06T10:24:26","modified_gmt":"2019-05-06T14:24:26","slug":"france-telecom-suicides-former-bosses-go-on-trial","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2019\/05\/06\/france-telecom-suicides-former-bosses-go-on-trial\/","title":{"rendered":"France Telecom suicides: Former bosses go on trial"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The ex-boss of France Telecom and six other former executives have gone on trial in Paris, accused of moral harassment linked to a spate of suicides among employees.<\/p>\n<p>Didier Lombard and his fellow defendants deny their tough restructuring measures were to blame for the subsequent loss of life.<\/p>\n<p>The company, since renamed Orange, is also on trial for the same offence.<\/p>\n<p>Thirty-five staff took their lives between 2008 and 2009.<\/p>\n<p>Some of them left messages blaming France Telecom and its managers.<\/p>\n<p>At the time, the newly privatised company was in the throes of a major reorganisation. Mr Lombard was trying to cut 22,000 jobs and retrain at least 10,000 workers.<\/p>\n<p>Some employees were transferred away from their families or left behind when offices were moved, or assigned demeaning jobs.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Accusations rejected<\/h2>\n<p>&#8220;I&#8217;ll get them out one way or another, through the window or through the door,&#8221; Mr Lombard was quoted as telling senior managers in 2007.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Lombard has accepted that the restructuring upset employees, but rejected the idea that it led to people taking their own lives.<\/p>\n<p>If found guilty, the defendants could each face a year in prison and \u20ac15,000 (\u00a312,800) in fines.<\/p>\n<p>Orange itself could face sanctions of \u20ac75,000.<\/p>\n<p>Among the cases documented:<\/p>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">In 2009, a woman aged 32 took her own life at work in Paris<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">A woman tried to kill herself in the eastern city of Metz on learning that she was about to be transferred for the third time in a year<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">In 2011, a worker aged 57 tried to kill himself\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-13204168\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">as he arrived at work near Bordeaux<\/a>.<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-48175938\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">The ex-boss of France Telecom and six other former executives have gone on trial in Paris, accused of moral harassment linked to a spate of suicides among employees.
