{"id":14258,"date":"2019-03-26T20:12:33","date_gmt":"2019-03-27T00:12:33","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=14258"},"modified":"2019-03-26T20:12:33","modified_gmt":"2019-03-27T00:12:33","slug":"angela-wrightson-killer-girls-bid-to-extend-anonymity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2019\/03\/26\/angela-wrightson-killer-girls-bid-to-extend-anonymity\/","title":{"rendered":"Angela Wrightson: Killer girls bid to extend anonymity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Two girls who were 13 and 14 when they murdered a vulnerable alcoholic in her own home are taking legal action to remain anonymous into adulthood.<\/p>\n<p>Angela Wrightson, 39, was subjected to a seven-hour attack in her Hartlepool home by the pair in December 2014.<\/p>\n<p>Both girls, who were not named in court because of their age,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-35989955\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">were jailed for a minimum of 15 years in April 2016.<\/a><\/p>\n<p>The High Court is due to consider whether the ban on identifying the killers can be extended indefinitely.<\/p>\n<p>The girls&#8217; legal team has already obtained an interim injunction extending their anonymity, although one of them has now turned 18.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/29C0\/production\/_89088601_hi032314810.jpg\" alt=\"CCTV of girls returning to 14 Stephen Street in the early hours\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">The two girls returned to Ms Wrightson&#8217;s home in the early hours of 9 December, where they would continue the attack<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The original trial judge, Mr Justice Globe, imposed reporting restrictions preventing the media from identifying the girls, on account of them being under 18 and due to their vulnerability.<\/p>\n<p>The issue will go before the High Court next month, where their legal teams will argue the media&#8217;s ban on reporting their identities should be extended.<\/p>\n<p>The current interim injunction applies to media reports, and all other internet postings.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Justice Globe halted a first trial at Teesside Crown Court and imposed a ban on reporting the second hearing months later in Leeds after he was alerted to hundreds of social media posts written about the girls.<\/p>\n<p>He later described them as &#8220;a blitz of extreme and disturbing comments posted on Facebook by members of the public&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Ms Wrightson, known locally as Alco Angela, was attacked after allowing the girls into her Stephen Street home to drink alcohol.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/DB7E\/production\/_89109165_hi032314457.jpg\" alt=\"tv with blood on it\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">The girls dropped a TV on Angela Wrightson&#8217;s head<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>A subsequent inquiry into the case found care home staff could not lock doors to prevent the older girl from running away and it heard that she had a chaotic family life.<\/p>\n<p>The younger girl had been placed in foster care after her parents complained of being unable to cope.<\/p>\n<p>Both girls were known to drink and take drugs.<\/p>\n<p>After the attack, the girls boasted to friends about being given a lift home by police, who were unaware of the murder.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-tees-47713853\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Two girls who were 13 and 14 when they murdered a vulnerable alcoholic in her own home are taking legal action to remain anonymous into adulthood.
