{"id":13982,"date":"2019-02-21T11:25:47","date_gmt":"2019-02-21T16:25:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=13982"},"modified":"2019-02-22T10:39:30","modified_gmt":"2019-02-22T15:39:30","slug":"alesha-macphail-murder-boy-16-found-guilty","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2019\/02\/21\/alesha-macphail-murder-boy-16-found-guilty\/","title":{"rendered":"Alesha MacPhail murder: Boy, 16, found guilty"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A 16-year-old boy has been found guilty of the abduction, rape and murder of six-year-old Alesha MacPhail.<\/p>\n<p>Her naked body was found on the Isle of Bute after she was reported missing on the morning of 2 July last year.<\/p>\n<p>Alesha had suffered 117 injuries and died from significant pressure being applied to her face and neck.<\/p>\n<p>Following a court ruling, the teenager has been identified as Aaron Campbell. Campbell was found guilty after a nine-day trial at the High Court in Glasgow.<\/p>\n<figure id=\"attachment_14011\" aria-describedby=\"caption-attachment-14011\" style=\"width: 528px\" class=\"wp-caption aligncenter\"><a href=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Aaron-Campbell.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-14011\" src=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Aaron-Campbell.jpg\" alt=\"Aaron Campbell\" width=\"528\" height=\"297\" srcset=\"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Aaron-Campbell.jpg 528w, https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/2019\/02\/Aaron-Campbell-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 528px) 100vw, 528px\" \/><\/a><figcaption id=\"caption-attachment-14011\" class=\"wp-caption-text\">Aaron Campbell is facing a life sentence<\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Judge Lord Matthews told the killer he had stolen Alesha&#8217;s life &#8220;in committing some of the most wicked and evil crimes this court has ever heard of in decades of dealing with depravity&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>He said he had &#8220;no idea&#8221; why the teenager committed the crime, and described the evidence in the case as &#8220;overwhelming&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The jury took three hours to return its unanimous verdict.<\/p>\n<p>In a witness impact statement, Alesha&#8217;s mother Georgina Lochrane said her world had been ripped from her.<\/p>\n<p>She added that she &#8220;had nightmares&#8221; about what happened to her daughter.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/A564\/production\/_105604324_alesha3.jpg\" alt=\"Alesha MacPhail\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Alesha&#8217;s body was found in the grounds of a former hotel<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Alesha&#8217;s father Robert MacPhail said day-to-day life was &#8220;almost impossible&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Prosecutor Iain McSporran QC, told the court the loss of a child would be hard to bear in any circumstance, but the &#8220;bestial manner&#8221; in which Alesha was murdered was &#8220;simply unfathomable&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The boy, who faces detention without limit of time, will be sentenced on 21 March.<\/p>\n<p>Alesha was just days into a three-week holiday on Bute when she was taken from her grandparents&#8217; home on Ardbeg Road, Rothesay.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Alerted detectives<\/h2>\n<p>Her grandparents, father and his girlfriend, who were sleeping in the flat, did not hear her being lifted from her bed.<\/p>\n<p>A major search was launched when the family woke to find that Alesha was missing.<\/p>\n<p>The six-year-old&#8217;s body was found in the grounds of a former hotel on the island.<\/p>\n<p>The killer&#8217;s own mother later alerted detectives after reviewing footage from two CCTV cameras outside the family home, which showed him coming and going three times between 01:54 and 04:07.<\/p>\n<p>Separate footage from two houses on Marine Place captured an eerie figure walking along the shoreline around 02:25.<\/p>\n<p>The individual appeared to be carrying something in front of them.<\/p>\n<p>A pathologist told the jury Alesha, who lived in Airdrie, North Lanarkshire, had no marks on her feet.<\/p>\n<p>This means she was carried to her death, a journey police estimate would have taken up to 17 minutes.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Drug debt<\/h2>\n<p>DNA evidence linking the accused to the scene was also recovered on Alesha&#8217;s body and on the clothes she had worn to bed.<\/p>\n<p>A forensic expert told the court the chances of the samples belonging to anyone other than the 16-year-old were more than one in a billion.<\/p>\n<p>The jury heard the teenager previously bought cannabis from Alesha&#8217;s father, Robert MacPhail, but the pair fell out five months before her death over an unpaid \u00a310 drug debt.<\/p>\n<p>At the start of the trial the accused lodged a special defence of incrimination blaming Mr MacPhail&#8217;s girlfriend, Toni McLachlan, for the murder.<\/p>\n<p>The 18-year-old, who was the last person in the flat to see Alesha alive, denied having anything to do with the crime.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-47322658\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A 16-year-old boy has been found guilty of the abduction, rape and murder of six-year-old Alesha MacPhail.
