{"id":13889,"date":"2019-02-13T06:35:32","date_gmt":"2019-02-13T11:35:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=13889"},"modified":"2019-02-13T06:35:32","modified_gmt":"2019-02-13T11:35:32","slug":"maria-ressa-head-of-philippines-news-site-rappler-arrested","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2019\/02\/13\/maria-ressa-head-of-philippines-news-site-rappler-arrested\/","title":{"rendered":"Maria Ressa: Head of Philippines news site Rappler arrested"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The CEO of Rappler, a news website critical of the government in the Philippines, has been arrested at its headquarters in Manila.\u00a0\u00a0Maria Ressa said the accusation of &#8220;cyber-libel&#8221; is an attempt by Rodrigo Duterte&#8217;s government to silence the publication.\u00a0\u00a0It is the latest in a string of charges against her for various alleged crimes, including tax evasion.\u00a0\u00a0Rappler journalists live-streamed the arrest on Facebook and Twitter.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/rapplerdotcom\/videos\/2040019362963124\">Footage streamed on Facebook<\/a>\u00a0showed plain-clothes party officials speaking with Maria Ressa, while several of the site&#8217;s journalists live-tweeted what was happening.\u00a0\u00a0Officers from the National Bureau of Investigations (NBI) reportedly ordered them to stop filming and taking photos.\u00a0\u00a0Miriam Grace Go, Rappler&#8217;s news editor,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/twitter.com\/miriamgracego\/status\/1095628924095102976\">tweeted that NBI agents had taken Ms Ressa off Rappler&#8217;s property<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The latest charge against Ms Ressa stems from a May 2012 report on a businessman&#8217;s alleged ties to a former judge in the Philippines&#8217; top court.\u00a0\u00a0The case comes under a controversial &#8220;cyber-libel&#8221; law, which came into force in September 2012, four months after the article in question was published.\u00a0\u00a0Officials first filed the case against her in 2017, but it was initially dismissed by the NBI because the one-year limit for bringing libel cases had lapsed.
