She swung her axe at a third customer but did not injure him.<\/p>\n<p>Amati pleaded not guilty on mental health grounds at a trial last year, but\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-australia-45053880\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a court rejected her argument<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>On Friday, a judge sentenced her to a maximum nine years in prison for the &#8220;very serious&#8221; incident.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;The risk of death was high in each cases and the fact that death did not occur was entirely a matter of good fortune,&#8221; Judge Mark Williams told the New South Wales District Court.<\/p>\n<p>Security footage played during the trial showed Amati approaching her first victim, Ben Rimmer, as he waited to buy a meat pie.<\/p>\n<p>After a brief conversation, she struck Mr Rimmer in the face. He was knocked to the ground with a 10cm (4in) facial wound and fractures.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/C6D5\/production\/_102810905_axe2.png\" alt=\"CCTV footage shows Evie Amati swinging an axe at Ben Rimmer\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">Amati attacked Ben Rimmer (pictured) as he waited to buy a meat pie<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>She then attacked her second victim, Sharon Hacker, near the door, fracturing the woman&#8217;s skull.<\/p>\n<p>Amati turned on a third customer, Shane Redwood, but he shielded himself using his backpack. She was arrested shortly after.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard that Amati had been &#8220;out of her mind&#8221; after consuming drugs, alcohol and prescription medication.<\/p>\n<p>She testified that her mental health had declined prior to the attack, after she began taking hormones to transition from male to female.<\/p>\n<p>However, a jury rejected her lawyer&#8217;s argument that she was suffering from &#8220;mental derangement&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Amati will be eligible for parole in 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-australia-46914419\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A woman who randomly attacked two people with an axe in an Australian convenience store has been jailed.
