{"id":13546,"date":"2019-01-10T09:11:37","date_gmt":"2019-01-10T14:11:37","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=13546"},"modified":"2019-01-10T09:11:38","modified_gmt":"2019-01-10T14:11:38","slug":"teenage-girl-detained-for-life-over-holytown-party-murder","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2019\/01\/10\/teenage-girl-detained-for-life-over-holytown-party-murder\/","title":{"rendered":"Teenage girl detained for life over Holytown party murder"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A 17-year-old girl who murdered a teenage boy at a party has been detained for life.<\/p>\n<p>The teenager was pregnant when she stabbed 18-year-old Conner Cowper in the neck in a flat in Holytown, North Lanarkshire, last April.<\/p>\n<p>The girl, who was high on cocaine and alcohol at the time, has since given birth while on remand.<\/p>\n<p>At the High Court in Edinburgh,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.scotland-judiciary.org.uk\/8\/2105\/HMA-v-Youth\">judge Lord Arthurson ordered the girl to serve at least 16 years<\/a>\u00a0in custody.<\/p>\n<p>He told her: &#8220;Your attack upon him was deliberate, brutal, unprovoked and entirely murderous, and this murder was committed by you at the age of 17 when you were still a child, while you were under the influence of cocaine and alcohol.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The trial heard claims that Conner had &#8220;fancied&#8221; the girl but she kissed another young man that night.<\/p>\n<p>The Crown claimed she &#8220;loved being the centre of attention&#8221; and was trying to play the two men off against each other.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/2834\/production\/_100829201_holytownstabbing1204.jpg\" alt=\"Holytown death\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">The street in Holytown was sealed off by police<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>But the girl, who is thought to be one of Scotland&#8217;s youngest female murderers, exploded when Conner branded her a &#8220;stupid wee girl&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The teenager, who was expelled from school aged 11, grabbed a knife and stabbed him before fleeing the scene.<\/p>\n<p>The jury heard the catastrophic puncture wound was 4in (11cm) deep.<\/p>\n<p>She was\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-scotland-glasgow-west-46558502\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">convicted at Glasgow High Court<\/a>\u00a0last month but sentence had been deferred to obtain reports about her character.<\/p>\n<p>Lord Arthurson had been told by defence advocate Tony Graham QC the girl had acknowledged that her actions had caused &#8220;devastation&#8221; and deprived Conner&#8217;s family of their loved one.<\/p>\n<p>But the judge said he had doubts about whether this was correct.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;I have been told that not only do you feel regret but you also expressed empathy towards the victim.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;However, as the presiding judge at your trial I saw nothing of that. Your demeanour was flat and disinterested and you didn&#8217;t give out any significant appearance of empathy.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You are a highly dangerous and unstable individual. The attack on Connor was deliberate, brutal, entirely unprovoked and entirely murderous.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Lord Arthurson told her the penalty for her crime was fixed by law.<\/p>\n<p>He added: &#8220;It was a deliberate, brutal and entirely murderous attack.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>During the trial last year the girl denied murder and claimed she stabbed Conner because she feared he was going to hit her.<\/p>\n<p>She also claimed to have been affected by a previous abusive relationship at the time of the fatal assault.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard how the girl had only known Conner through Facebook before the party and told jurors he was a &#8220;nice person&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>But the court heard how she left him to die while fellow party goers tried to save his life.<\/p>\n<p>Officers found her nearby &#8220;laughing&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The trial heard how she later asked an officer: &#8220;Can I have my knife back?
