{"id":13427,"date":"2018-12-29T09:02:34","date_gmt":"2018-12-29T14:02:34","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=13427"},"modified":"2018-12-29T09:02:34","modified_gmt":"2018-12-29T14:02:34","slug":"cape-town-race-row-erupts-after-black-visitors-cleared-from-beach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/12\/29\/cape-town-race-row-erupts-after-black-visitors-cleared-from-beach\/","title":{"rendered":"Cape Town race row erupts after &#8216;black visitors cleared from beach&#8217;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Protesters have taken to one of Cape Town&#8217;s most picturesque beaches after private security guards were accused of ordering black visitors to leave.<\/p>\n<p>The guards, hired by local residents, allegedly cleared the Clifton 4th beach of tourists on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators say black beachgoers were unfairly targeted, but the firm denies closing the beach and says it only acts to protect residents from crime.<\/p>\n<p>Beaches and other public areas were segregated during the apartheid era.<\/p>\n<p>Cape Town Mayor Dan Plato said that the security firm &#8220;had no authority to ask anyone to leave Clifton beach&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We will not allow any private organisations to limit access to our public spaces,&#8221; he said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Deputy Police Minister Bongani Mkongi vowed to &#8220;go hard on the security company&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;This is a property of the state, property of the people and therefore we don&#8217;t need security companies here,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>Mayor Plato said that the guards had &#8220;asked people of all races to leave&#8221; and had not targeted black people specifically.<\/p>\n<p>Demonstrators, who converged on the beach on Friday evening, disputed this assertion.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;These private security guards&#8230; are actually briefed to not allow black people who appear to look like they are from the townships on to the beach,&#8221; local activist Chumani Maxwele told the News 24 website.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Maxwele, who instigated a social media protest under the hashtag #ReclaimClifton, oversaw the slaughter of a sheep in a ritual that protesters said would cleanse the beach of racism.<\/p>\n<p>A small number of animal rights activists protested against the act.<\/p>\n<p>Alwyn Landman, chief executive of the PPA security firm, whose job he said was to protect residents from criminal activity, denied that the company had closed the beach at all.<\/p>\n<p>He told News 24 that police had cleared the area after a crime had been committed.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;It was absolute mayhem and [the police] were really doing a great job to stabilise the situation,&#8221; he said.<\/p>\n<p>However, the police said they had not received any reports of criminal activity on the beach on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-africa-46709435\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Protesters have taken to one of Cape Town&#8217;s most picturesque beaches after private security guards were accused of ordering black visitors to leave.
