{"id":13153,"date":"2018-11-25T14:19:05","date_gmt":"2018-11-25T19:19:05","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=13153"},"modified":"2018-11-25T14:19:05","modified_gmt":"2018-11-25T19:19:05","slug":"facebook-documents-seized-by-mps-investigating-privacy-breach","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/11\/25\/facebook-documents-seized-by-mps-investigating-privacy-breach\/","title":{"rendered":"Facebook documents seized by MPs investigating privacy breach"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A cache of Facebook documents has been seized by MPs investigating the Cambridge Analytica data scandal.<\/p>\n<p>Rarely-used Parliamentary powers were used to demand that the boss of a US software firm hand over the details.<\/p>\n<p>The Observer,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2018\/nov\/24\/mps-seize-cache-facebook-internal-papers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">which first reported the story<\/a>, said the documents included data about Facebook&#8217;s privacy controls.<\/p>\n<p>Damian Collins, MP, later told the BBC that he believed the documents were &#8220;highly relevant&#8221; to his inquiry. Facebook has demanded their return.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Escorted to Parliament<\/h2>\n<p>The documents were intercepted when an executive of US tech firm Six4Three was on a trip to London.<\/p>\n<p>In a highly unusual move the House of Commons serjeant-at-arms was sent to the businessman&#8217;s hotel and he was given a final warning and a two-hour deadline to comply with the order.<\/p>\n<p>When the executive failed to do so he was escorted to Parliament and warned he risked fines and imprisonment if the documents were not surrendered, the paper said.<\/p>\n<p>The firm is involved in court action against Facebook in the US, where the documents were obtained through legal procedures.<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-body__inner\">\n<p>Damian Collins, chairman of the Commons Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) Committee, said he believed the documents &#8211; which include emails &#8211; contain information about how Facebook and other parties handle user data.<\/p>\n<p>He told the BBC: &#8220;We felt this [information] was highly relevant to the inquiry&#8230; and therefore we sent an order to Mr [Ted] Kramer through the serjeant-at-arms asking that these documents be supplied to us. Ultimately, that order was complied with.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Mr Collins said he had reviewed the documents, and his committee would discuss this week how it intends to proceed.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">&#8216;Return the documents&#8217;<\/h2>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/technology\/2018\/nov\/24\/mps-seize-cache-facebook-internal-papers\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In the Observer<\/a>, Mr Collins said the methods used to obtain the documents were unprecedented, adding: &#8220;But it&#8217;s an unprecedented situation.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>He criticised Facebook&#8217;s lack of cooperation with his committee, and said the &#8220;documents contained answers to some of the questions we have been seeking about the use of data, especially by external developers&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook had yet to respond to a BBC request for comment, but told the Observer: &#8220;The materials obtained by the DCMS committee are subject to a protective order of the San Mateo Superior Court restricting their disclosure.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We have asked the DCMS committee to refrain from reviewing them and to return them to counsel or to Facebook. We have no further comment.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Facebook and its founder Mark Zuckerberg have faced intense pressure over the social media giant&#8217;s use of personal data, the spread of fake news, and, this month, allegations that it hired a PR firm to make claims about the financier George Soros.<\/p>\n<p>Last month the UK data watchdog fined Facebook \u00a3500,000 following its investigation into the Cambridge Analytica affair.<\/p>\n<p>Facebook has appealed against the fine, claiming that the watchdog found no evidence that UK users&#8217; personal data had been shared inappropriately and the penalty was therefore unjustified.<\/p>\n<p>The Cambridge Analytica scandal stems from the discovery that an academic at the University of Cambridge &#8211; Dr Aleksandr Kogan &#8211; used a personality quiz to harvest up to 87 million Facebook users&#8217; details.<\/p>\n<p>Some of this was subsequently shared with the political consultancy Cambridge Analytica, which used it to target political advertising in the US.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-43649018\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">It was initially reported<\/a>\u00a0that about 1.1 million UK-based users had had their details exposed.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-portrait no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/9585\/production\/_102477283_cambridge_analitica_v2_640-nc.png\" alt=\"How was Facebook users' data misused?\" width=\"640\" height=\"1260\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div id=\"topic-tags\">\n<div id=\"u8630297577474266\">\n<div class=\"tags-container\">\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"tags-title story-body__crosshead\">Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/business-46334810\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A cache of Facebook documents has been seized by MPs investigating the Cambridge Analytica data scandal.
