Earlier officials in Budapest insisted Hungary had no hand in his escape.<\/p>\n<p>Macedonia is preparing to make a formal request to Hungary for his extradition.<\/p>\n<p>He was forced from office in 2016 over a wire-tapping scandal and this year\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-europe-44230563\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a court found he had unlawfully influenced officials<\/a>\u00a0over the purchase of a luxury bulletproof Mercedes Benz. He says the charges were politically motivated.<\/p>\n<p>A new government led by social democrats is now in office.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">How did he get away?<\/h2>\n<p>Confirming that Gruevski was in the country, Hungary&#8217;s government did not disclose his movements.<\/p>\n<p>Hungarian Prime Minister Viktor Orban&#8217;s cabinet chief, Gergely Gulyas, said only that the fugitive former prime minister had sought asylum at a Hungarian representation outside Macedonia, and that Hungary had played no part in getting him out.<\/p>\n<p>On Tuesday,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/NGruevski\/posts\/10156942186402716\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Gruevski had posted on Facebook to announce that he was in Budapest<\/a>\u00a0and had claimed political asylum after &#8220;countless&#8221; threats against his life.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/12B1F\/production\/_104357567_macedoniahungary1118.png\" alt=\"BBC map\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/Policia-e-Shtetit-1502420603377639\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A statement from Albanian police said Gruevski was &#8220;a passenger in a car belonging to the Hungarian embassy&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0in Tirana, Albania&#8217;s capital, when it crossed the country&#8217;s northern border into Montenegro on Sunday evening.<\/p>\n<p>A warrant for his arrest was only made known to the Albanian authorities on Tuesday, the statement said.<\/p>\n<p>Police in Macedonia have started investigating their own ranks for possible accomplices in the escape, the Macedonian government said.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">Why go to Hungary?<\/h2>\n<p>Gruevski served as Macedonian prime minister for a decade from 2006, and as leader of the VMRO-DPMNE party from 2003 until 2017.<\/p>\n<p>During that time he had good relations with fellow nationalist Viktor Orban, who commended him for his efforts to stop undocumented migrants passing up through the Balkans towards western Europe.<\/p>\n<p>The Hungarian government said in a statement that it &#8220;in no way&#8221; wished to &#8220;intervene in the internal affairs of sovereign countries, and we consider the assessment of the former Macedonian prime minister&#8217;s asylum request to be solely a legal issue&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The asylum claim could also prove difficult for Hungary&#8217;s already strained relations with other EU states.
