{"id":13055,"date":"2018-11-11T02:42:47","date_gmt":"2018-11-11T07:42:47","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=13055"},"modified":"2018-11-11T02:42:47","modified_gmt":"2018-11-11T07:42:47","slug":"armistice-day-remembrance-events-around-world-mark-end-of-ww1","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/11\/11\/armistice-day-remembrance-events-around-world-mark-end-of-ww1\/","title":{"rendered":"Armistice Day: Remembrance events around world mark end of WW1"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Commemorations are under way around the globe to mark the centenary of the Armistice that ended World War One.<\/p>\n<p>In Australia, a ceremony was held at the National War Memorial in Canberra, while in Adelaide an aircraft dropped thousands of red paper poppies.<\/p>\n<p>In New Zealand, a gun salute took place in the capital, Wellington.<\/p>\n<p>The main European ceremony will be held in Paris, with US President Donald Trump and Russian President Vladimir Putin among those set to attend.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-46168197\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">in the UK, a series of special events are being held<\/a>\u00a0to mark the end of the 1914-18 conflict.<\/p>\n<p>For the first time, members of the public chosen by ballot will pay their respects at the national memorial in Whitehall, central London.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">The events begin in the south<\/h2>\n<p>During his speech in Canberra, Australian Prime Minister Scott Morrison spoke of the importance of remembrance, saying people need &#8220;to learn from the past so that we can better navigate the changing currents of our own times, for our own children, and for the next generations&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Australian and New Zealand forces sustained huge loss of life in the 1915 Gallipoli campaign.<\/p>\n<p>In New Zealand, the traditional two minutes of silence at 11:00 were followed by a 100-gun salute on the Wellington waterfront, while church bells rang across the country.
