{"id":12872,"date":"2018-10-30T08:31:14","date_gmt":"2018-10-30T12:31:14","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=12872"},"modified":"2018-10-30T08:31:14","modified_gmt":"2018-10-30T12:31:14","slug":"porn-loving-us-official-spreads-malware-to-government-network","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/10\/30\/porn-loving-us-official-spreads-malware-to-government-network\/","title":{"rendered":"Porn-loving US official spreads malware to government network"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">The porn habit of an employee at the US Geological Survey (USGS) led to a government network becoming infected with malware,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.oversight.gov\/sites\/default\/files\/oig-reports\/ManagementAdvisory%20_USGSITSecurityVulnerabilities_101718_0.pdf\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">an official report<\/a>\u00a0has revealed.<\/p>\n<p>The employee, who has not been named, had &#8220;an extensive history of visiting adult pornography websites&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Investigators found malware on many of the 9,000 sites he or she accessed.<\/p>\n<p>The US Office of the Inspector General has recommended that the USGS blacklist &#8220;rogue&#8221; websites.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Our analysis confirmed that many of the pornographic images were subsequently saved to an unauthorised USB device and personal Android cell phone,&#8221; the report explained<\/p>\n<p>As well as government computers, the employee&#8217;s personal mobile was also found to be infected.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">USB risk<\/h2>\n<p>Reports of the case were\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/techcrunch.com\/2018\/10\/29\/porn-sites-blamed-after-government-network-infected-malware\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">picked up by news site TechCrunch<\/a>, which confirmed that the Eros Center does not maintain any classified networks.<\/p>\n<p>The site also reported that the malware in question was designed to steal data from infected computers and was &#8220;associated&#8221; with\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/technology-35091536\/technology-explained-what-is-ransomware\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">ransomware attacks<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>USGS employees are advised not to connect USB devices or mobile phones to government computers &#8211; though USB connections are not disabled.<\/p>\n<p>An IT policy that prevents USB use should be implemented, the US Department of the Interior suggested.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-46030242\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">The porn habit of an employee at the US Geological Survey (USGS) led to a government network becoming infected with malware,\u00a0an official report\u00a0has revealed.
