{"id":12233,"date":"2018-08-28T07:02:07","date_gmt":"2018-08-28T11:02:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=12233"},"modified":"2018-08-28T07:02:07","modified_gmt":"2018-08-28T11:02:07","slug":"yemen-conflict-un-experts-detail-possible-war-crimes-by-all-parties","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/08\/28\/yemen-conflict-un-experts-detail-possible-war-crimes-by-all-parties\/","title":{"rendered":"Yemen conflict: UN experts detail possible war crimes by all parties"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">UN human rights experts believe war crimes may have been committed by all parties to the conflict in Yemen.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.ohchr.org\/EN\/NewsEvents\/Pages\/DisplayNews.aspx?NewsID=23479&amp;LangID=E\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">In their first such report<\/a>, they allege Yemeni government forces, the Saudi-led coalition backing them, and the rebel Houthi movement have made little effort to minimise civilian casualties.<\/p>\n<p>They point to the bombing and shelling of schools, hospitals and markets, in which thousands of people have died.<\/p>\n<p>The coalition&#8217;s air and naval blockade may also be a war crime, they warn.<\/p>\n<p>The experts will present their report to the UN Human Rights Council next month.<\/p>\n<p>On Monday, the coalition accused the UN of bias for condemning two air strikes on Houthi-controlled areas that are reported to have killed scores of Yemeni children.<\/p>\n<p>Spokesman Turki al-Malki said the UN&#8217;s information was based on &#8220;rebel stories&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>Yemen has been devastated by a conflict that escalated in early 2015, when the Houthis seized control of much of the west of the country and forced President Abdrabbuh Mansour Hadi to flee abroad.<\/p>\n<div class=\"story-body\">\n<div class=\"story-body__inner\">\n<p>Alarmed by the rise of a group they saw as an Iranian proxy, the UAE, Saudi Arabia and seven other Arab states intervened in an attempt to restore the government.<\/p>\n<p>Almost 10,000 people &#8211; two-thirds of them civilians &#8211; have been killed and 55,000 others injured in the fighting, according to the United Nations.<\/p>\n<p>The fighting and a partial blockade by the coalition has also left 22 million people in need of humanitarian aid, created the world&#8217;s largest food security emergency, and led to a cholera outbreak that is thought to have affected a million people.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/103EB\/production\/_102893566_yemen_control_640_v1-nc.png\" alt=\"Map showing control of Yemen\" width=\"640\" height=\"630\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-45329220\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">UN human rights experts believe war crimes may have been committed by all parties to the conflict in Yemen.
