Inquiries are continuing.\u2019 Claims of historic abuse at the home have come under scrutiny at the ongoing Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry (SCAI).<\/p>\n<div class=\"artSplitter mol-img-group\">\n<div class=\"mol-img\">\n<div class=\"image-wrap fff-pic\">\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" id=\"i-138c5a54ff82a2de\" class=\"blkBorder img-share b-loaded\" src=\"https:\/\/i.dailymail.co.uk\/i\/newpix\/2018\/08\/23\/23\/4F575C8E00000578-6092645-image-a-18_1535061778545.jpg\" alt=\"Eddie McCall with his brothers were abused by nuns as a children at the Smyllum Park School for orphans. His younger brother Francis died at the home, nobody knows where he&#8217;s buried<\/em><\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div><\/div>\n<div class=\"rotator-title\"><\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">News of the arrests comes as SCAI chairman Lady Smith prepares to publish a damning report on Smyllum within days.\u00a0\u00a0Last night Alan Draper of In Care Abuse Survivors said: \u2018The news today is a vindication of all those survivors who had the courage to come forward.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u2018We look forward to a successful prosecution of all those who committed crimes with impunity, in the knowledge that they would be protected by their superiors.\u00a0Bishops and religious superiors will also have questions to answer for their failures.\u2019<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">It is understood that those arrested within the last few weeks include nuns and former lay members of staff at the now-closed institution.\u00a0\u00a0Former residents of the home have told SCAI during hearings that nuns beat them, forced them to eat vomit and ritually humiliated them for bed-wetting.\u00a0\u00a0One recalled satanic abuse and another claimed a fellow child may have died after being left naked in the rain for three hours as punishment.\u00a0\u00a0Another former resident compared the Daughters of Charity, who ran the Catholic institution until it closed in 1981, to Nazi concentration camp commandants.<\/p>\n<div class=\"artSplitter mol-img-group\">\n<p class=\"imageCaption\">A spokesman for the Daughters of Charity said: \u2018During this period we have publicly urged anyone who believes they have been the victim of a crime to contact the police.\u00a0 We continue to offer our sincere and heartfelt apology to anyone who suffered any form of abuse while at our facilities.\u2019<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Meanwhile, a separate police probe is under way over claims of abuse involving the Sisters of Nazareth, another Catholic order which came under investigation by the SCAI earlier this year.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">The Mail has been told there is an ongoing police investigation into people associated with the order, which ran homes across Scotland where abuse has been widely reported.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">Andi Lavery of abuse survivors\u2019 group White Flowers Alba said: \u2018We welcome today\u2019s news of Police Scotland\u2019s arrests on behalf of the four families we represent from Smyllum Park orphanage.\u2019<\/p>\n<div id=\"mol-f54545f0-a720-11e8-9927-c15431e10351\" class=\"art-ins mol-factbox news\" data-version=\"2\">\n<h3 class=\"mol-factbox-title\">Probe extends to Quarriers<\/h3>\n<div class=\"ins cleared mol-factbox-body\">\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">\u00a0Scotland&#8217;s\u00a0landmark child abuse inquiry is set to examine allegations of child abuse at Quarriers children\u2019s homes.\u00a0\u00a0Survivors will give evidence at the \u00a315.7million Scottish Child Abuse Inquiry (SCAI).\u00a0\u00a0Other organisations under the spotlight amid abuse claims include the Aberlour Child Care Trust and Barnardo\u2019s.\u00a0\u00a0Quarriers has said it will \u2018play a full and active part\u2019 in the SCAI when it resumes in October because it believes victims \u2018have the right to be heard\u2019.<\/p>\n<p class=\"mol-para-with-font\">A statement on the charity\u2019s website states: \u2018Seven former Quarriers\u2019 employees were convicted of offences which took place between 1955 and 1981.
