{"id":12105,"date":"2018-08-16T03:34:39","date_gmt":"2018-08-16T07:34:39","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=12105"},"modified":"2018-08-16T03:34:39","modified_gmt":"2018-08-16T07:34:39","slug":"trumps-dirty-war-on-media-draws-editorials-in-300-us-outlets","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/08\/16\/trumps-dirty-war-on-media-draws-editorials-in-300-us-outlets\/","title":{"rendered":"Trump&#8217;s &#8216;dirty war&#8217; on media draws editorials in 300 US outlets"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">More than 300 news outlets are launching a campaign on Thursday to counter President Donald Trump&#8217;s attacks and promote a free press.<\/p>\n<p>The Boston Globe made the call last week for a nationwide denouncement of the president&#8217;s &#8220;dirty war&#8221; against the media, using the hashtag #EnemyOfNone.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Trump has derided media reports as &#8220;fake news&#8221; and attacked journalists as &#8220;enemies of the people&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>UN experts have said this raises the risk of violence against journalists.<\/p>\n<p>The Boston Globe had pledged to write an editorial &#8220;on the dangers of the administration&#8217;s assault on the press&#8221; on 16 August, and asked others to do the same.<\/p>\n<p>The initial positive response from 100 news organisations has grown closer to 350 with major US national newspapers and smaller local outlets answering the call, along with international publications<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.theguardian.com\/commentisfree\/2018\/aug\/15\/the-guardian-view-on-the-press-and-donald-trump-at-work-not-at-war\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u00a0like the UK newspaper The Guardian<\/a>.<\/p>\n<h2 class=\"story-body__crosshead\">What have the papers said?<\/h2>\n<ul class=\"story-body__unordered-list\">\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Starting with the Boston Globe itself, the editorial there, headlined Journalists Are Not The Enemy,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/apps.bostonglobe.com\/opinion\/graphics\/2018\/08\/freepress\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">argued that a free press had been a core American principle for more than 200 years<\/a><\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">The New York Times chose the headline A Free Press Needs You, calling Mr Trump&#8217;s attacks &#8220;dangerous to the lifeblood of democracy&#8221;. It published\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.nytimes.com\/interactive\/2018\/08\/15\/opinion\/editorials\/free-press-local-journalism-news-donald-trump.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">excerpts from dozens more publications<\/a>\u00a0beneath<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/nypost.com\/2018\/08\/15\/hate-the-press-all-you-want-well-keep-reporting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The New York Post<\/a>\u00a0&#8211; hardly a left-leaning paper &#8211; answered the Globe&#8217;s call by saying &#8220;Who are we to disagree?&#8221; adding: &#8220;It may be frustrating to argue that just because we print inconvenient truths doesn&#8217;t mean that we&#8217;re fake news, but being a journalist isn&#8217;t a popularity contest. All we can do is to keep reporting.&#8221; But it also said: &#8220;Will this make a difference? Not one whit&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\"><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www2.philly.com\/philly\/opinion\/editorials\/newspaper-free-press-editorials-donald-trump-philadelphia-20180815.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The Philadelphia Inquirer<\/a>\u00a0said its city was the birthplace of US democracy, writing: &#8220;If the press is not free from reprisal, punishment or suspicion for unpopular views or information, neither is the country. Neither are its people&#8221;<\/li>\n<li class=\"story-body__list-item\">Opinion writers at McClatchy\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.miamiherald.com\/opinion\/editorials\/article216780730.html\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">put out an editorial for the 30 daily newspapers it runs, including the Miami Herald,<\/a>\u00a0saying they hardly ever spoke with one voice but were doing so now. It said &#8220;enemies of the people&#8221; was &#8220;what Nazis called Jews. It&#8217;s how Joseph Stalin&#8217;s critics were marked for execution&#8221;<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>Another paper to join the campaign\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/www.cjonline.com\/opinion\/20180815\/editorial-press-isnt-enemy-of-people\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">was the Topeka Capital-Journal<\/a>\u00a0which said of Mr Trump&#8217;s attack on the media: &#8220;It&#8217;s sinister. It&#8217;s destructive. And it must end now.&#8221; The paper was one of the few to endorse Mr Trump in 2016.<\/p>\n<p>The fact that Mr Trump won without such media endorsements may cast doubt on whether the Globe&#8217;s campaign would actually dent his support.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/08\/15\/manafort-lawyers-rest-fraud-case-without-calling-witnesses\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">A poll released on Tuesday by Quinnipiac University<\/a>\u00a0suggested that 51% of Republican voters now believed the media to be &#8220;the enemy of the people rather than an important part of democracy&#8221; and 52% of the Republican supporters polled were not concerned the Mr Trump&#8217;s criticism would lead to violence against journalists.<\/p>\n<p>Among all voters, 65% believe the news media to be an important part of democracy, the poll suggests.<\/p>\n<p>There have also been some dissenting voices to the Globe&#8217;s campaign.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/townhall.com\/columnists\/tomtradup\/2018\/08\/12\/fight-collusion-pass-up-a-newspaper-on-august-16th-n2509127\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Tom Tradup at the conservative website Townhall.com<\/a>, panned the Globe&#8217;s &#8220;pathetic bid to pretend it is still relevant&#8221;, writing: &#8220;I would not presume to tell anyone else what to think or what to do. But as for me &#8211; and I suspect many others &#8211; I won&#8217;t be putting any coins in any newspaper box August 16th.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The Wall Street Journal declined to take part. An earlier piece by James Freeman argued Mr Trump was entitled to free speech and the Globe&#8217;s drive ran counter to the very independence it was seeking.<\/p>\n<p>Thursday&#8217;s campaign comes after a series of incidents and Trump remarks ramping up pressure on the media.<\/p>\n<p>While Mr Trump&#8217;s daughter Ivanka distanced herself from her father&#8217;s media attacks,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/av\/world-us-canada-45052705\/white-house-officials-clash-over-trump-s-attacks-on-media\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">White House press secretary Sarah Sanders refused to say the media were not an enemy of the people<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>And at a presidential rally in Florida in July, CNN filmed Mr Trump&#8217;s supporters yelling insults and swearing at reporters covering the event.
