{"id":12032,"date":"2018-08-10T11:34:43","date_gmt":"2018-08-10T15:34:43","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=12032"},"modified":"2018-08-10T11:34:43","modified_gmt":"2018-08-10T15:34:43","slug":"man-sentenced-to-24-years-jail-for-murdering-teen-found-in-mineshaft","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/08\/10\/man-sentenced-to-24-years-jail-for-murdering-teen-found-in-mineshaft\/","title":{"rendered":"Man sentenced to 24 years&#8217; jail for murdering teen found in mineshaft"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>By\u00a0<a title=\"\" href=\"http:\/\/www.abc.net.au\/news\/karen-percy\/5358026\" target=\"_self\">Karen Percy<\/a><\/p>\n<p class=\"first\">A Melbourne man has been sentenced to 24 years in jail for the murder of teenager Cayleb Hough, whose remains were found in a shallow mineshaft three months after he was reported missing.<\/p>\n<div class=\"inline-content wysiwyg right\">\n<div class=\"inner\">\n<h2>Key points:<\/h2>\n<ul>\n<li>Thomas Kelson assaulted Cayleb Hough for hours, using weapons like a knife and knuckle dusters<\/li>\n<li>He was motivated by a &#8220;delusional belief&#8221; that the 17-year-old had raped and shot Kelson&#8217;s father<\/li>\n<li>The victim&#8217;s family and friends applauded the sentence, and told Kelson he was &#8220;filth&#8221; and &#8220;scum&#8221; as he was taken from court<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<\/div>\n<\/div>\n<p>Thomas Kelson, 28, was handed a non-parole period of 19 years by Supreme Court Justice Andrew Tinney.\u00a0\u00a0Cayleb Hough, 17, died from blunt force trauma and his jaw was broken in two places.\u00a0\u00a0Kelson pleaded guilty to the murder charge in June, just before a trial was due to begin.\u00a0\u00a0In sentencing, Justice Tinney described the killing as &#8220;a brutal and completely unnecessary crime&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You killed a young person who was a friend of yours,&#8221; Justice Tinney said.<\/p>\n<p>The courtroom erupted into applause as Thomas was sentenced.\u00a0\u00a0As Kelson was led from the dock, the teenager&#8217;s mother and other relatives and friends yelled abuse at Thomas, screaming &#8220;you&#8217;re filth&#8221; and &#8220;you&#8217;re scum&#8221;.\u00a0\u00a0Cayleb Hough&#8217;s mother was distressed throughout the hearing.\u00a0\u00a0As the judge left the bench, people in court thanked him.<\/p>\n<h2>Bashed for hours over &#8216;delusional&#8217; rape theory<\/h2>\n<p>Cayleb Hough went missing in December 2015.\u00a0 His body was discovered in March the following year in a state nature park near Bacchus Marsh, north-west of Melbourne.\u00a0\u00a0The court heard he and Kelson had met at a house party in the Melbourne suburb of Skye before Cayleb Hough&#8217;s disappearance.\u00a0\u00a0They consumed drugs and alcohol and then went together to another home in Collingwood.\u00a0\u00a0There, Kelson assaulted the victim for hours because, the judge told him, &#8220;[you had] the delusional belief that Cayleb Hough had raped and shot your father&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You&#8217;re going to die today.
