{"id":12022,"date":"2018-08-10T11:15:51","date_gmt":"2018-08-10T15:15:51","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=12022"},"modified":"2018-08-10T11:15:51","modified_gmt":"2018-08-10T15:15:51","slug":"far-right-austrian-identitarians-cleared-of-hate-speech","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/08\/10\/far-right-austrian-identitarians-cleared-of-hate-speech\/","title":{"rendered":"Far-right Austrian &#8216;Identitarians&#8217; cleared of hate speech"},"content":{"rendered":"<div id=\"article-description\">An Austrian court on Thursday found 17 members of Austria&#8217;s far-right &#8216;Identitarian Movement&#8217; (IB\u00d6) not guilty of charges of criminal association and hate speech.<\/div>\n<div id=\"article-body\">\n<p>Ten prominent members of the group and seven other &#8220;active sympathizers&#8221;\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.at\/tag\/identitarian\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">had gone on trial in the city of Graz earlier this month<\/a>\u00a0on charges connected to several of the group&#8217;s stunts in recent years.<\/p>\n<p>Being found guilty of criminal association would have posed a serious threat to the IB\u00d6&#8217;s ability to continue operating.<\/p>\n<p>Two of the accused were, however, found guilty on lesser charges.<\/p>\n<p>One was convicted of bodily harm and coercion over an incident in June 2016 in which members stormed the stage during a talk on refugee policy at Klagenfurt University and unrolled banners reading &#8220;Stop Immigration&#8221; and &#8220;Integration is a lie&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>The other was found guilty of criminal damage in a separate IB\u00d6 stunt. Both were fined.<\/p>\n<p>One of the IB\u00d6&#8217;s leaders, Martin Sellner, was prevented from entering the UK in March, with authorities judging his presence would not have been &#8220;conducive to the public good&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In April he took part in an action near the French-Italian border in which far-right activists blocked a mountain pass in protest at the rise in migrants crossing the Alps.<\/p>\n<p>Since late 2017, Austria has been governed by a coalition of the centre-right People&#8217;s Party (\u00d6VP) and the far-right Freedom Party (FP\u00d6) after both parties made a crackdown on immigration a centre-piece of their election platforms.<\/p>\n<p>The FP\u00d6&#8217;s leadership regularly condemns the actions of &#8220;identitarian&#8221; activists.<\/p>\n<p>However, Austrian media have documented links between such activists and FP\u00d6 members at a local level.<\/p>\n<\/div>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Source\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.thelocal.at\/20180726\/far-right-austrian-identitarians-cleared-of-hate-speech\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">thelocal.at<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">An Austrian court on Thursday found 17 members of Austria&#8217;s far-right &#8216;Identitarian Movement&#8217; (IB\u00d6) not guilty of charges of criminal association and hate speech.
