Abdul-Ghani&#8217;s father, Siraj Wahhaj, was arrested.<\/p>\n<p>Taos County Sheriff Jerry Hogrefe said the authorities were awaiting an identification of the remains.<\/p>\n<p>Mr Wahhaj was detained along with another man, Lucas Morton. Mr Wahhaj is also suspected of abducting his three-year-old son<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Three women were also arrested, according to\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.facebook.com\/permalink.php?story_fbid=2133992226889342&amp;id=1519082115047026\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">a Taos County Sheriff&#8217;s Office post on Facebook<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>The 11 children, aged between one and 15 years old, have been taken into care by local social services.<\/p>\n<p>The father is also accused of leaving Clayton County, Georgia, last December with Abdul-Ghani.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;We discovered the remains yesterday on Abdul&#8217;s fourth birthday,&#8221; Sheriff Hogrefe said on Tuesday, seeming to become emotional.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/138F3\/production\/_102851108_threemothers.jpg\" alt=\"Police photo of the three women thought to be the mothers of the 11 children\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">From left to right: Jany Leveille, Hujhrah Wahhaj, Subhannah Wahhaj<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>According to court papers, Mr Wahhaj told the boy&#8217;s mother he planned to perform an exorcism on the child.<\/p>\n<p>The warrant said the boy suffered from severe medical issues, but his father believed he was possessed by the devil.<\/p>\n<p>The compound was on land owned by local resident Jason Badger, who said he had repeatedly asked the local authorities to remove the group from his property.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities mounted a raid after receiving a message, possibly from within the compound, that said: &#8220;We are starving and need food and water.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>It is not clear who sent the message.<\/p>\n<p>When he was arrested, Mr Wahhaj was armed with several guns, including a loaded AR-15 semi-automatic rifle, the sheriff said.<\/p>\n<p>The women, believed to be mothers of some of the children, have been named as Jany Leveille and Subhannah Wahhaj, both 35, and Hujrah Wahhaj, 38.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape no-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/75A3\/production\/_102851103_us_compound_new_mexico_v2_640-nc.png\" alt=\"Map showing compound in New Mexico where children were found starving, 6 August 2018\" width=\"640\" height=\"351\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><\/figure>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-45104872\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">The remains of a young boy have been found at a remote desert compound in New Mexico, police say.
