{"id":11879,"date":"2018-07-28T19:44:07","date_gmt":"2018-07-28T23:44:07","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=11879"},"modified":"2018-07-28T19:44:07","modified_gmt":"2018-07-28T23:44:07","slug":"egypt-court-sentences-75-to-death-over-2013-pro-morsi-protests","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/07\/28\/egypt-court-sentences-75-to-death-over-2013-pro-morsi-protests\/","title":{"rendered":"Egypt court sentences 75 to death over 2013 pro-Morsi protests"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">An Egyptian court has sentenced 75 people to death for their role in the violence that erupted after President Mohammed Morsi&#8217;s removal in 2013.<\/p>\n<p>The group, including leaders of the banned Muslim Brotherhood, are part of a mass trial of more than 700 people.<\/p>\n<p>Rights group\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/press-releases\/egypt-shawkan-verdict-expected-mass-death-penalty-trial#.WzZSP4Z2qVI.twitter\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Amnesty International has called the trial &#8220;grossly unfair&#8221;<\/a>\u00a0and a violation of Egypt&#8217;s constitution.<\/p>\n<p>Their cases will now be referred to the Grand Mufti, who must be consulted whenever the death sentence is applied.<\/p>\n<p>But while Egyptian law requires the opinion of the Grand Mufti, the country&#8217;s highest Islamic legal authority, it is non-binding &#8211; although rarely ignored.<\/p>\n<p>The August 2013 clashes took place a month after the democratically-elected Mr Morsi was ousted, with hundreds of demonstrators and dozens of security personnel killed after the latter moved in to break up two sit-in protests.<\/p>\n<p>Among those arrested that day was the award-winning photojournalist, Mahmoud Abou Zeid, better known as Shawkan.<\/p>\n<p>He was detained while taking pictures of the dispersal of a protest. He has been held in prison ever since and faces a series charges.<\/p>\n<p>A decision in his case was postponed by the judges on Saturday.<\/p>\n<p>In the months that followed the clashes, there was a crackdown on the former president&#8217;s supporters, and on the Muslim Brotherhood group to which he belongs, which Egypt later declared a &#8220;terrorist organisation&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Amnesty International pointed out that, while many thousands of people have been arrested since, &#8220;Egyptian authorities have never questioned or prosecuted any of the security force personnel&#8221; who were involved in the clashes.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-middle-east-44993661\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">An Egyptian court has sentenced 75 people to death for their role in the violence that erupted after President Mohammed Morsi&#8217;s removal in 2013.
