Mixed martial arts fighter Conor McGregor has been charged with assault and criminal mischief by New York City Police Department (NYPD) following\u00a0an incident at a UFC media day.<\/a><\/p>\n

The former two-weight UFC champion, 29, was one of a group of men alleged to have vandalised a bus containing rival fighters, the\u00a0UFC said.<\/i><\/a><\/p>\n

The Irishman turned himself into police custody at 9pm local time on Thursday.<\/p>\n

NYPD have told BBC Sport that McGregor will see a judge after 7am (12pm BST).<\/p>\n

“McGregor has been charged with three counts of assault and one of criminal mischief,” said a spokesperson.<\/p>\n

The incident occurred at Brooklyn’s Barclays Center, where the UFC had gathered to promote Saturday’s show, headlined by Khabib Nurmagomedov and Max Holloway.<\/p>\n

McGregor was with fellow fighter Artem Lobov, who was due to fight featherweight Alex Caceres.<\/p>\n

The UFC says McGregor and Lobov – accompanied by more than a “dozen individuals” – attacked the bus.<\/p>\n

Footage appears to show McGregor throwing a trolley at the bus – smashing a window – followed by further altercations.<\/p>\n

UFC\u00a0says<\/i><\/a>\u00a0two fighters were injured and have been withdrawn from Saturday’s undercard.<\/p>\n

Lightweight Michael Chiesa received several facial cuts, while flyweight Ray Borg suffered an eye injury.<\/p>\n

Lobov has also been removed from the bill, due to his alleged involvement.<\/p>\n

“The organisation deems today’s disruption completely unacceptable and is currently working on the consequences that will follow,” the UFC said.<\/p>\n

McGregor, who was\u00a0beaten by Floyd Mayweather<\/a>\u00a0in a boxing match in August 2017, has not fought in the UFC since knocking out Eddie Alvarez in November 2016.<\/p>\n

Before Thursday’s incident, he was\u00a0stripped of his UFC lightweight title.<\/a><\/p>\n
