{"id":11051,"date":"2018-03-23T14:01:49","date_gmt":"2018-03-23T18:01:49","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=11051"},"modified":"2018-03-23T14:03:28","modified_gmt":"2018-03-23T18:03:28","slug":"craigslist-drops-dating-ads-after-new-law","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/03\/23\/craigslist-drops-dating-ads-after-new-law\/","title":{"rendered":"Craigslist drops dating ads after new law"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">Classified advertising website Craigslist has closed its dating ads section in the US, in response to a new bill against sex trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>The bill states that websites can now be punished for &#8220;facilitating&#8221; prostitution and sex trafficking.<\/p>\n<p>Ads promoting prostitution and child sexual abuse have previously been posted in the &#8220;personals&#8221; section of Craigslist.<\/p>\n<p>The company said keeping the section open in the US was too much of a risk.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, Craigslist said the new law would &#8220;subject websites to criminal and civil liability when third parties (users) misuse online personals unlawfully&#8221;.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef-1.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/10BF1\/production\/_100539586_craigs.gif\" alt=\"The personals section of Craigslist\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">The personals section has been closed in the US<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;Any tool or service can be misused. We can&#8217;t take such risk without jeopardising all our other services, so we are regretfully taking Craigslist personals offline,&#8221; it said.<\/p>\n<p>In March, US congress passed the\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link-external\" href=\"https:\/\/www.congress.gov\/bill\/115th-congress\/house-bill\/1865\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Allow States and Victims to Fight Online Sex Trafficking Act<\/a>\u00a0(Fosta). It will apply to all states in the US.<\/p>\n<p>Websites are not usually held responsible for the content that members post &#8211; as long as illegal material is removed as soon as the service provider is made aware.<\/p>\n<p>However, the bill states that &#8220;websites that facilitate traffickers in advertising the sale of unlawful sex acts&#8221; should not be protected.<\/p>\n<p>It imposes fines and prison terms for those who own or operate a website that facilitates prostitution.<\/p>\n<p>On Thursday, social network Reddit also banned its escorts message board.<\/p>\n<p>It said &#8220;paid services involving physical sexual contact&#8221; were against its latest policies.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/technology-43514645\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">Classified advertising website Craigslist has closed its dating ads section in the US, in response to a new bill against sex trafficking.
