All we have to do now is try to heal as a family. That&#8217;s what I want.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>The teen&#8217;s defence attorney, Brian Pfefferle, had argued that\u00a0the combination of fetal alcohol spectrum disorder, her age and her childhood \u2014 which included\u00a0sexual abuse \u2014 made\u00a0her &#8220;incapable of really controlling her behaviour and thinking.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In explaining the decision, Justice\u00a0Anand\u00a0said the teen&#8217;s age and cognitive issues didn&#8217;t excuse her actions that night.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;You had the ability to control your actions. You didn&#8217;t,&#8221;\u00a0Anand\u00a0said\u00a0directly to the girl.<\/p>\n<p>Along with a life sentence, there will also be a lifetime firearm ban for the teen. The judge has recommended\u00a0that the teen spend as much of her sentence as possible at Prairie Regional Psychiatric Centre.<\/p>\n<h2>Teen confessed to killing<\/h2>\n<p>During her\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/saskatoon\/teen-who-killed-baby-could-take-stand-on-final-day-of-sentencing-1.4450193\">sentencing hearing last December<\/a>, the court watched police room evidence tape of\u00a0the teen confessing to the killing. She told police\u00a0she escaped the open custody wing of Kilburn Hall \u2014 a youth detention facility \u2014\u00a0the night before the killing.<\/p>\n<p>After wandering the streets for hours, she was eventually taken in by the\u00a0Cantre\u00a0family and offered a place to stay.<\/p>\n<p>She had been drinking and told police she may have smoked a joint laced with crystal meth in the hours after her escape.<\/p>\n<p>Once inside the home\u00a0the teen drank vodka while the rest of the house was asleep.<\/p>\n<h2>Teen apology not accepted by family<\/h2>\n<p>The teen heard the baby, Nikosis, crying. She then beat and stabbed the child before leaving the room.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;I let all my anger out on that baby,&#8221; she said on the tape.<\/p>\n<ul class=\"embedlinks\">\n<li><a href=\"http:\/\/www.cbc.ca\/news\/canada\/saskatoon\/courtroom-tears-details-teen-killing-baby-boy-1.4435034\">Courtroom in tears as teen talks of killing of baby boy<\/a><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p>The teen offered a brief statement in court, saying she is &#8220;truly sorry&#8221; and that &#8220;if this happened to my baby, I would be very devastated.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>That apology was not accepted by\u00a0Longman.<\/p>\n<p>&#8220;There&#8217;s no sorries for what you did.
