{"id":10809,"date":"2018-02-21T06:47:13","date_gmt":"2018-02-21T11:47:13","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=10809"},"modified":"2018-02-21T06:47:13","modified_gmt":"2018-02-21T11:47:13","slug":"us-teenager-jailed-smuggling-tiger-across-mexico-border","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/02\/21\/us-teenager-jailed-smuggling-tiger-across-mexico-border\/","title":{"rendered":"US teenager jailed for smuggling tiger across Mexico border"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">A US teenager has been sentenced to six months in prison after he was found guilty of trying to smuggle a Bengal tiger cub across the US-Mexico border.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-41048250\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">The six-week-old cub was found in a box on the floor of the teenager&#8217;s car<\/a>\u00a0as he was crossing from Mexico into the US near the city of San Diego.<\/p>\n<p>His lawyer argued that his client had had &#8220;a lapse of judgement&#8221; and that he wanted to keep the tiger as a pet.<\/p>\n<p>But prosecutors said he was running an animal smuggling business.<\/p>\n<p>They said mobile phone messages sent by the teenager, named as 18-year-old Luis Valencia, showed he was boasting about getting large sums of money for exotic animals such as jaguars and lions.<\/p>\n<p>The tiger cub, named Moka, was placed in San Diego Zoo&#8217;s Safari Park.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/FD8A\/production\/_97560946_mediaitem97560945.jpg\" alt=\"The tiger cub recovering at San Diego zoo (25 August 2017)\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">The cub was handed to San Diego Zoo, where he has been coming on fine<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>The smuggling of exotic animals has become a lucrative business in Mexico, where drug traffickers often keep entire menageries on their extensive ranches.<\/p>\n<p>Earlier this month, another tiger cub was intercepted by Mexican police after someone tried to mail him in a plastic crate from the state of Jalisco to Quer\u00e9taro.<\/p>\n<p>The two-month-old cub, which had been sedated, was found by a sniffer dog looking for contraband.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/world-us-canada-43140476\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">A US teenager has been sentenced to six months in prison after he was found guilty of trying to smuggle a Bengal tiger cub across the US-Mexico border.
