{"id":10571,"date":"2018-02-05T13:53:00","date_gmt":"2018-02-05T18:53:00","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/?p=10571"},"modified":"2018-02-05T13:53:00","modified_gmt":"2018-02-05T18:53:00","slug":"hatton-garden-jewellery-raider-terry-perkins-dies","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/worldjusticenews.com\/news\/2018\/02\/05\/hatton-garden-jewellery-raider-terry-perkins-dies\/","title":{"rendered":"Hatton Garden jewellery raider Terry Perkins dies"},"content":{"rendered":"<p class=\"story-body__introduction\">One of the \u00a314m Hatton Garden jewellery raiders, Terry Perkins, has died in prison aged 69.<\/p>\n<p>Perkins from Enfield, north London, was serving a jail term for the &#8220;largest burglary in English legal history&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>One of four ringleaders of the 2015 raid, he was last week ordered to pay back \u00a36,526,571 or face a further seven-year jail term.<\/p>\n<p>Perkins and his fellow raiders stole goods after drilling into a vault at London&#8217;s Hatton Garden Safe Deposit.<\/p>\n<p>He was serving his sentence in HMP Belmarsh and is believed to have been ill for some time.<\/p>\n<p>In a statement, the Prison Service said: &#8220;As with all deaths in custody, there will be an independent investigation by the Prisons and Probation Ombudsman.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>Perkins was jailed for seven years, alongside two of the ringleaders, John &#8220;Kenny&#8221; Collins, 77, and Daniel Jones, 63,\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-london-35767110\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">after pleading guilty to conspiracy to commit burglary in 2016<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Fellow ringleader Brian Reader, 78, who was too ill to attend the initial sentencing, was later jailed for six years and three months.<\/p>\n<p>Last Tuesday, the\u00a0<a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-london-42880223\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">gang members were ordered to pay back \u00a327.5m<\/a>\u00a0between them or have their sentences increased.<\/p>\n<p>Judge Christopher Kinch QC said the men jointly benefitted from an estimated \u00a313.69m worth of stolen cash, gold and gems.<\/p>\n<p>Peter Rowlands, Perkins&#8217; barrister, said his client &#8211; who had been diagnosed with &#8220;severe heart failure&#8221; &#8211; would have to serve the extra time as there was &#8220;no prospect&#8221; of any further funds being recovered.<\/p>\n<p>During last week&#8217;s hearing, the judge said if any of the four could raise \u00a36.4m to pay back, the others would each have that total taken off their confiscation order.<\/p>\n<p>If that were the case it would bring the total amount paid back by the burglars to about \u00a38.2m.<\/p>\n<figure class=\"media-landscape has-caption full-width\"><span class=\"image-and-copyright-container\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"responsive-image__img js-image-replace\" src=\"https:\/\/ichef.bbci.co.uk\/news\/624\/cpsprodpb\/100FA\/production\/_85368756_85368755.jpg\" alt=\"Hatton Garden Safety Deposit scene of robbery\" width=\"976\" height=\"549\" data-highest-encountered-width=\"624\" \/><\/span><figcaption class=\"media-caption\"><span class=\"media-caption__text\">The vault at Hatton Garden Safe Deposit Ltd was breached over the 2015 Easter weekend<\/span><\/figcaption><\/figure>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>Perkins was caught after Hatton Garden investigators installed a listening device in his blue Citroen Saxo, on which he was recorded saying he planned to use his share of the spoils to fund his pension.<\/p>\n<p><a class=\"story-body__link\" href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-london-35126667\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">He was arrested with Collins and Jones<\/a>, having dropped off a holdall containing some of the loot.<\/p>\n<p>Perkins celebrated his birthday during the raid and was involved in all stages of the operation, including disposing of the stolen goods.<\/p>\n<p>He was inside the Hatton Garden building posing as a builder and &#8220;working&#8221; inside the lift on 31 March during the raid, which was carried out over the Easter weekend in 2015.<\/p>\n<p>When his home was searched police found jewellery, cash, blue workman&#8217;s overalls and five pairs of white fabric gloves that were used by the burglars who aimed to leave no forensic evidence at the scene.<\/p>\n<p>Source: <a href=\"http:\/\/www.bbc.co.uk\/news\/uk-england-london-42949795\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">bbc.co.uk<\/a><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<div class=\"mh-excerpt\">One of the \u00a314m Hatton Garden jewellery raiders, Terry Perkins, has died in prison aged 69.
