to Trump hailed after year of human rights violations"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Trump presidency has already seen controversial travel ban, withdrawal announcement on climate change, Jerusalem recognition, women\u2019s health funding cuts, withdrawal of protection for immigrants, and harsh measures over Mexico border<\/p>\n<p>A \u2018galvanising spirit of resistance has swept the world\u2019 &#8211; Margaret Huang<\/p>\n<p>Ahead of the one-year anniversary (20 January) of the inauguration of US President Donald Trump, Margaret Huang, executive director of Amnesty International USA, said:<\/p>\n<blockquote><p>\u201cWhile the policies of the Trump administration presented daunting challenges over the past year, we also saw the rise of a fierce and determined movement of people across the country and around the world standing up to defend human rights.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cStarting with the throngs of people braving the January cold to fill the streets on the very first day of his presidency and continuing throughout the year, we have taken heart in the galvanising spirit of resistance that has swept the world.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have marched alongside both seasoned activists standing up for women\u2019s rights and we have welcomed those who have never actively protested before in denouncing Trump\u2019s discriminatory Muslim ban.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe have placed welcome mats for refugees at the foot of Trump Tower, and filled London\u2019s Grosvenor Square with 100 sombre Statues of Liberty standing in silent protest at the US Embassy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom Sydney to Madrid, human rights defenders have made it known that the politics of hate and fear have no place in the world we wish to build for ourselves and our children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAs dismayed as we are to see that President Trump has no intention of abandoning his hateful rhetoric and dangerous policies, we are just as energised to meet his challenges head on.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhatever the next year brings, we take heart in knowing that there is a strong global community of activists from all corners of the world who will rise up wherever human rights are threatened.\u201d<\/p><\/blockquote>\n<h3>A year of human rights violations<\/h3>\n<p>Among other things in the past year, Amnesty has strongly criticised the Trump administration\u2019s plan (reported earlier this week) to consider using\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnestyusa.org\/press-releases\/president-trump-must-reject-plan-to-use-nuclear-arms-under-any-circumstances\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">nuclear weapons<\/a>\u00a0in response to a cyber-attack in the USA; the ending of \u201cTemporary Protected Status\u201d for over\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/press-releases\/usa-ending-immigration-status-salvadorans-devastating-betrayal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">250,000 people from El Salvador<\/a>\u00a0in the USA; the decision to\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/press-releases\/trumps-reckless-recognition-unified-jerusalem-undermines-palestinian-human-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">recognise Jerusalem<\/a>\u00a0as the capital of Israel, its insistence on pushing ahead with a revised\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/press-releases\/usa-disappointment-over-supreme-court-decision-discriminatory-travel-ban\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">multi-country travel ban<\/a>; an executive order affecting the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/press-releases\/usa-trumps-illegal-mexico-border-crackdown-endangering-lives-new-report\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Mexico-USA border<\/a>\u00a0which allows for the forcible return of people to life-threatening situations; \u00a0the withdrawal from the Paris Agreement on\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/press-releases\/trumps-expected-move-climate-change-would-be-assault-human-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">climate change<\/a>; the reinstatement of the\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/blogs\/global-voices\/donald-trump-womens-rights-global-gag-rule\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">\u201cglobal gag rule\u201d<\/a>affecting funding for international women\u2019s health programmes; its continued\u00a0<a href=\"https:\/\/www.amnesty.org.uk\/press-releases\/usas-sale-f-16s-bahrain-sends-dangerous-signal-human-rights\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">sale of military equipment<\/a>\u00a0to countries with poor human rights records;
