Boston police shot and killed a man wearing body armor and wielding an assault rifle who critically injured two officers responding to a domestic disturbance call late Wednesday, according to Police Commissioner William Evans.<\/p>\n
Evans said\u00a0the two officers \u2014\u00a0one\u00a0a 28-year veteran and\u00a0the other a 12-year veteran of the Boston police force\u00a0\u2014\u00a0were hospitalized in \u201cextremely critical condition.\u201d<\/p>\n
Nine officers were\u00a0treated for minor injuries, stress and trauma.<\/p>\n
At a\u00a0morning news conference, Evans said the\u00a0gunman, identified as\u00a0Kirk Figueroa, 33, opened fire on\u00a0officers\u00a0responding to a report of a person with a\u00a0gun around\u00a011 p.m. Wednesday in East Boston.<\/p>\n
Evans\u00a0described\u00a0a “hectic scene” as officers\u00a0rushed to pull injured colleagues to safety while under fire.<\/p>\n
\u201cSome of them were involved in the exchange of gunfire, some involved in applying their hands to the wounds of these officers,\u201d Evans told reporters.<\/p>\n
Evans said police used deadly force on the gunman as a\u00a0last resort. “We had to do what we had to do,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n
\u201cI commend the officers. They moved in and neutralized the threat pretty quick (so)\u00a0that no one else got killed,\u201d he told reporters.<\/p>\n
The district attorney\u2019s office said it will\u00a0investigate\u00a0the use of deadly force, as is standard protocol.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
