Premila Shunmugam, the owner of Johannesburg travel agent Silver Touch Events and Travel, is accused of scamming families out of millions for dream holidays in a case involving R5 million in alleged fraud. Families who saved hard to pay for once-in-a-lifetime trips like umrah pilgrimages wait for justice after being left empty-handed and heartbroken. Some paid between R130,000 and R260,000 for packages that were cancelled without refunds, turning excitement into despair. Premila Shunmugam, ran Silver Touch Events and Travel, promising seamless trips for religious pilgrimages and holidays. Victims say they paid large sums for umrah packages to Saudi Arabia, only for the trips to be cancelled without refunds or explanations. Some families handed over R130,000 to R260,000, saving for months or even years to make the journey, but were left with nothing but empty promises. One family shared how they trusted Shunmugam because of her reputation, but after paying, communication stopped, and their dream trip vanished. This pattern of taking money and cancelling led to 30 fraud charges, with the total loss hitting R5.6 million. For these families, the scam not only stole money but crushed spiritual plans, leaving them feeling betrayed and helpless. Shunmugam allegedly used the funds for personal gain, a claim that has fuelled anger among those affected. |
